Offer Description

Description This research will focus on the hydrodynamics of propulsion systems that leverage starting jets, a mechanism where impulsive jet formation contributes to thrust generation, mimicking biological propulsion observed in aquatic animals. The work aims to develop innovative propulsion concepts for underwater vehicles that are highly efficient, quiet, and capable of precise maneuvering. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team specializing in fluid mechanics, propulsion systems, and applied hydrodynamics. This role will involve performing high-fidelity simulations and theoretical modeling to better understand the starting jet phenomenon and its potential applications to the design of next-generation underwater vehicles. This research is significant for various applications, including marine exploration, defense, and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) development. This postdoctoral position offers access to world-class research facilities and computational resources at Khalifa University, with opportunities for collaboration with leading experts in the field of fluid dynamics and aerospace propulsion systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-level research on underwater vehicle propulsion systems utilizing the starting jets phenomena.
  • Develop and apply advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to simulate starting jets in underwater environments.
  • Analyze jet dynamics, vortex formation, and thrust generation to optimize propulsion efficiency.
  • Study bio-inspired propulsion mechanisms and their potential integration into vehicle designs.
  • Perform validation of simulation results through theoretical analysis or comparison with experimental data.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences.
  • Collaborate with faculty members, PhD students, and other researchers on interdisciplinary projects related to fluid mechanics and propulsion.
  • Assist in proposal development for new research projects and funding opportunities.
  • Mentor graduate students and contribute to their research activities.

Qualifications

  • PhD from a reputable university in Aerospace/Mechanical/Chemical/Physics or related discipline.
  • Experience writing scientific or review papers.
  • A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture.
  • Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • The proven ability to work on multiple tasks with competing demands and deadlines.
  • Ability to train and mentor students and support fellow researchers.
  • Highly developed reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • PhD gained from a top 200 QS or THE ranked University.
  • High impact first-author publications in top 10% journals in the relevant field.
