Qatar Research Development and Innovation (QRDI) is a major source of research funding along with student research funding programs. As the national and largest University in the country, QU is the recipient of most of QNRF/QRDI awards, with much research-active faculty members able to win multiple grants.CSD Profile:The Center for Sustainable Development aims to develop sustainable and integrated solutions which address many contemporary and significant challenges posed by the rapid economic and demographic changes of the State of Qatar. Our holistic vision for interdisciplinary and innovative research enables us to identify the key priorities by working together with relevant stakeholders. This way, our research is based on a demand-driven approach and oriented towards tailor-made solutions that are economically feasible, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life in the State of Qatar and the broader region. Currently, our emphasis is on research areas related to Biotechnology, Algae Technology, Sustainable Renewable Energy, Food-Water-Waste Sustainability and Human Sustainability. We strive to create interdisciplinary research that is aligned with Qatar's National Research Strategy, the Qatar National Vision 2030, as well as the research agenda of QU. We are committed to innovative and applied research to address the major challenges of sustainable development in Qatar. We aim to enhance local capacity and secure additional external resources, to conduct demand-driven research on sustainable development. One of our main goals is to develop research collaborations and active research groups, while effectively engaging the industry, students, and academic peers in our activities. Alongside research, we welcome staff and students in our capacity building activities. We are interested in collaborating with local and international industrial and academic partners to advance the knowledge on sustainable development.Duties & ResponsibilitiesDuties & Responsibilities:The Center for Sustainable Development is looking to fill a full-time Research Assistant/Research Associate position in Algal Biotechnology. The position is open to individuals who hold an MSc/PhD in biotechnology, bio-engineering, life sciences or a related field from an internationally recognized university. The main role of the research assistant/associate will be developing nutrient-rich microalgae biomass cultivation, harvesting, and downstream processing of the biomass that will be used as feed for zooplankton and fish. The candidate will be positioned at the CSD labs at Aquatic Fisheries Research Center (AFRC) to support collaboration with AFRC and other relevant stakeholders to achieve sustainable aquaculture in Qatar. The candidate is also expected to assist QU students with their relevant thesis work. The candidate is expected to:1.Contribute to research projects, ensuring adherence to protocols, budget constraints and timelines.2.Enhance operations, management of CSD facilities at AFRC3.Drive publication efforts in international refereed journals, and present research findings at national conferences.4.Generate scientific progress reports, contribute to research proposals, grant applications, and initiate high quality research in the area of expertise.5.Assist with ordering and procurement of supplies and equipment as well as with equipment maintenance and undertake additional research tasks essential to meet role requirements and research center goals.6.Maintain algal cultivation scale-up of cultures to the volume necessary for zooplankton and fish feeding experiment.7.Operate and maintain different types of photobioreactors.8.Characterize microalgal metabolites as necessary.9.Harvest microalgae using membrane filtration.10.Extract pigments and lipids from the harvested biomass using GRAS solvent and/or supercritical fluid.11.Assist in life cycle impact assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) of microalgae biomass as a potential value-added ingredient in fish meal formulations.Duties & ResponsibilitiesDuties & Responsibilities:The Center for Sustainable Development is looking to fill a full-time Research Assistant/Research Associate position in Algal Biotechnology.
