Mō te tūranga - About the role

Our team of trusted legal specialists work with teams across ANZ New Zealand, providing guidance on personal, business and institutional banking; our funds management business; operations; regulation; and finance. As a Senior Legal Counsel in ANZ Legal’s team, you’ll play a key role in providing comprehensive legal advice, support, and services to the ANZ Institutional function. This includes areas such as Loans & Markets Execution, Loan Syndications and Agency, Corporate Finance, Institutional Relationships, and Debt Capital Markets. You will be responsible for mitigating legal risks, ensuring robust governance, and directly contributing to the delivery of strategic business objectives. Ka aha tō rā e kite ai? - What will your day look like?

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will:
  1. Deliver legal services to the Institutional business leveraging a range of internal and external resources.
  2. Provide high-quality, commercially appropriate, timely, and cost-effective legal services and risk assessments to ANZ Institutional.
  3. Ensure that legal expenditures are reasonable and appropriately incurred.
  4. Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with key internal stakeholders including the ANZ legal team, ANZ Institutional business and the Business Governance, Risk and Tax teams.
  5. Build and sustain strong relationships with external stakeholders, ensuring that the interests of ANZ Institutional and its customers are well-represented.
  6. Offer clear, concise legal advice in plain language, providing straightforward and pragmatic guidance to ANZ Institutional.
  7. Provide high quality legal and corporate governance advice that mitigates the legal risks, ensures appropriate governance and contributes to the delivery of strategic business goals.
  8. Support Institutional to understand and work within the legal environment through developing procedures and facilitating training.

Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:
  1. A growth-mindset with a desire to continue learning in evolving areas of law and innovation and simplification of the financial services industry.
  2. Extensive knowledge of relevant financial services laws and regulation, syndicated lending and/or debt capital markets law and practice, and general corporate law.
  3. Working knowledge of competition law relevant in the syndication, agency and debt capital markets context would be beneficial.
  4. Proven experience working in a senior legal position across a risk or markets environment.
  5. Sound ability to assess legal risks and provide commercially appropriate legal advice and risk assessments.
  6. Superior interpersonal and communication skills to deliver clear, concise legal advice.
  7. Proven ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with various stakeholders, including internal and external partners.
  8. Proven problem-solving ability and ability to advocate and influence.
  9. Sound ability to manage competing priorities, legal expenditures and ensure cost-effective legal services.
  10. Capability to develop procedures and facilitate training to help the ANZ Institutional team understand and navigate the legal environment.
