Āu Mahi | What You Will Do The University of Canterbury (UC) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Reporting and Compliance to lead the financial services team. As a key player in the finance function, the Head of Reporting and Compliance will oversee financial reporting, treasury management, and policy development. This role requires a leader who is passionate about delivering accurate, timely financial information while fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement within the team. Ideally you will possess strong technical expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to upholding the University's values and strategic goals. Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • People Leadership & Team Development : Lead, inspire, and coach a high-performance accounting team.
  • Financial Reporting : Ensure accurate and timely financial reports for senior management, external parties, and regulatory bodies, including the Ministry of Education and University Council.
  • Data Integrity : Maintain financial data integrity by ensuring accurate transactions, compliance with policies, and regular reconciliations.
  • Treasury Management : Oversee cash flow, investment returns, and foreign exchange, ensuring alignment with the University's financial strategy.
  • Policy Development & Compliance : Lead the creation and implementation of financial policies and ensure compliance with regulations and best practices.
  • Risk Management & Compliance : Identify and manage financial risks, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and reporting regulations.
Minimum Requirements:
  • At least 12 years of experience in accounting, including a minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing financial reporting and management accounting.
  • Extensive experience with Oracle Financials or similar systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and solid technical knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a team of 8+ staff, driving performance and professional development.
  • Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Accounting, or related field, with Chartered Accountant membership (NZICA) required.
