Roles and Responsibilities

  • Primarily responsible for providing inpatient and outpatient neurological care by examining, diagnosing, and treating disorders of the nervous system.
  • Performs neurological examinations of the nerves of the head & neck; muscle strength and movement; balance, ambulation, and reflexes; and sensation, memory, speech, language, and other cognitive abilities.
  • Competent to manage core neurological diseases which include: demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system, the epilepsies, headache and migraine, movement disorders, polyneuropathies, spinal cord disorders, cognitive dysfunction, genetic diseases with a primarily neurologic manifestation, etc.
  • Must be able to perform & read diagnostic tests such as EEG (electroencephalography), EMG/NCV (electromyography/nerve conduction velocity), VEP (visual evoked potential), BAEP (brainstem auditory evoked potential).
  • Identify the presence of pathological blood conditions and prescribe and administer their relevant medications and drugs.
  • Counsel patients or others on the background of neurological disorders including risk factors, or genetic or environmental concerns.
  • Refer patients to other health care practitioners as necessary.
  • Advise other physicians on the treatment of neurological problems.
  • Prescribe or administer medications, such as anti-epileptic drugs, and monitor patients for behavioral and cognitive side effects.
  • Prepare, maintain, or review records that include patients' histories, neurological examination findings, treatment plans, or outcomes.
  • Order supportive care services such as physical therapy, specialized nursing care, and social services.
Education A Medical degree and the successful completion of a residency and fellowship in Neurology from an accredited institute. Home country license and certification to practice Neurology. Active DOH license as Consultant Neurology or equivalent. Experience
  • At least 7 years of experience working in a clinical setting with a proven track record.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity as necessary to complete procedures and patient examinations.
  • Concentrate for extended lengths of time.
  • Tolerate frequent interruptions and accommodate readily to changing work priorities.
  • Readily and effectively communicate with others, both verbally and in writing.
  • Good command in written and spoken English, Arabic fluency is an advantage.
  • Presentable and pleasing personality.
  • Proactive and approachable.
  • Required physical activities to include standing, walking, kneeling, lifting, stretching, stooping, and repetitive movements.

Desired Candidate Profile

  1. Advanced Knowledge of Neurology
    • Deep understanding of neurological anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to identify and treat a wide range of disorders.
    • Expertise in both common and rare neurological conditions, including:
      • Stroke , epilepsy , Parkinson’s disease , Alzheimer's disease , multiple sclerosis (MS), dementia , migraines , and neuromuscular disorders .
      • Movement disorders , neuropathy , seizure disorders , headaches , dizziness , and muscle diseases .
  2. Clinical Examination and Diagnosis
    • Proficiency in conducting detailed neurological exams to assess the function of the nervous system, which may include assessing cognitive function, reflexes, motor skills, and sensory responses.
    • Expertise in interpreting diagnostic tests like MRI , CT scans , EEG (electroencephalogram) , EMG (electromyography) , nerve conduction studies , and lumbar punctures .
  3. Treatment Planning and Management
    • Ability to develop individualized treatment plans for neurological conditions, considering the patient’s age, medical history, and specific symptoms.
    • Knowledge of pharmacological treatments, including the use of anticonvulsants , antiparkinsonian medications , immunosuppressive drugs , and neuroprotective agents .
    • Expertise in managing neurological rehabilitation , helping patients recover from neurological impairments and improving their quality of life.
  4. Surgical Referral and Collaboration
    • Ability to identify when surgical intervention is necessary, such as neurosurgery for conditions like brain tumors , epilepsy , or spinal cord issues , and refer patients to neurosurgeons or other specialists.
    • Collaborative work with other specialists, including neurosurgeons , psychologists , rehabilitation specialists , and nurses in a multidisciplinary team approach.
  5. Emergency Neurological Care
    • Proficiency in managing acute neurological emergencies such as stroke , status epilepticus , acute neuropathies , and head injuries .
    • Ability to provide urgent interventions, such as thrombolytic therapy for stroke or emergency antiepileptic drugs for seizures.
  6. Patient-Centered Communication
    • Excellent communication skills to discuss complex neurological diagnoses and treatment options with patients and their families.
    • Ability to provide emotional support for patients dealing with chronic neurological conditions, which often come with significant psychological burdens.
  7. Evidence-Based Practice and Research
    • Commitment to staying updated with the latest research and treatment modalities in neurology through ongoing professional development.
    • Participation in clinical research and trials , contributing to advancing the field of neurology and improving treatment outcomes.
  8. Education and Teaching
    • Involvement in educating junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals about neurological conditions and treatments.
    • Teaching patients and families about managing chronic neurological conditions, lifestyle adjustments, and improving quality of life.
