Remote work will be considered for the right candidate, so non-Sydney based candidates are still encouraged to apply.Please note: This role is hiring with a commencement date of January 2024.Saber Astronautics needs the services of an experienced to mid-career Database Engineer and Administrator to support our expanding data centric processing of Space Domain Awareness and Space Operations products. You will assist a team of developers with database infrastructure for tracking, propagating and calculating conjunctions for all space objects in earth and lunar orbit. You will assist in scaling up our ability to command and control satellites, and perform space traffic management.Database Engineers are responsible for the design, implementation and management of Saber's digital databases. You will work as an integral part of a highly-skilled, creative, and motivated team to ensure high quality benchmarks are met for delivery of Saber's products.Key Accountabilities and Deliverables:Develop and optimise PostgreSQL database structures and performance.Define and implement database engineering excellence/ best practice.Model and scale databases (relational, time-series and data lakes) to handle highly available, fault-tolerant OLTP and OLAP workloads.Assist in the design and building of scalable, highly available HTTP APIs (REST, RPC and GraphQL) in Python and Web Apps in Typescript.Assist with the database side of building and running low latency messaging pipelines and event streams for time-series data including Kafka, MQTT, ZeroMQ, SNS/SQS.Interface with workloads on multiple Kubernetes clusters (Self managed and/or AWS EKS incl. Fargate and EC2) and AWS Lambda.Improve database systems delivery through Infrastructure As Code (Pulumi) and DevOps (CI/ CD via Bitbucket Pipelines).Consult with customer engineering teams, product managers and other developers to understand requirements, guide the implementation of database structure.Assist with scoping and organising projects including planning, estimation and scheduling of database tasks.Assist in identifying product and process weaknesses and possible improvements in an environment of continual improvement.Analyse system and production defects, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.Keep up to date with technical trends, tools and methodologies; undertake research as required.Requirements:Demonstrated skills in solution architecture/design, particularly for low-latency, event-driven systems.Proven experience running large-scale RDBMS-backed applications on AWS, ideally EKS.Strong experience with relational database design & optimization, particularly PostgreSQL.Experience with IaC and DevOps.Experience with SQLAlchemy or other ORMs.Natural communicator with experience in high-level stakeholder management.Experience developing CI/CD workflows and tools, in particular database migrations and deployment (Bitbucket Pipelines, Gitlab CI, Github Actions, Jenkins etc).Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Cloudwatch, Datadog and/ or Honeycomb.Strong experience writing clean, test-driven, and maintainable code.Experience working in an Agile environment, using tools such as JIRA.Version control experience utilising industry standard software such as Git.Experience working within large existing codebases, following and maintaining a coding standard, and proper code documentation.Well-versed at debugging and problem solving.Qualifications:Bachelor Degree or Certification in Computer Science/Software Engineering/Information Technology with 3 years industry experience and/or 5+ years professional experience required if not degree qualified.Strong IaC knowledge and experience, ideally with Pulumi (experience with Cloudformation/Terraform is good too)Experience with time-series databases.Familiarity with Space Engineering principles, including Orbital Mechanics.How to ApplyEvidence of AUS CitizenshipPortfolio of prior work (code samples and/or projects of note)2-3 professional referencesOnce you have assembled your application, please email the completed bundle to:
