JOURNAL OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY CANADAWith our current Editor-in-Chief's term is coming to an end, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is doing its due diligence and is seeking applications for the Editor-in-Chief position for the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada (JOGC). The role would be for a 5-year term, with a possibility of extension.The JOGC is Canada's peer-reviewed Journal of obstetrics, gynaecology, and women's health. Each monthly issue contains original research articles, reviews, and editorials on all aspects of reproductive health. The JOGC is the original publication source of evidence-based clinical guidelines, committee opinions, and policy statements of the SOGC.The SOGC is dedicated to promoting excellence in the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology and to advancing the health of women through leadership, advocacy, collaboration, and education. The SOGC has over 3500 members, comprised of obstetricians/gynaecologists, family physicians, nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals working in the field of sexual and reproductive health.POSITION DESCRIPTIONThe Editor-in-Chief is responsible for establishing and developing the JOGC's strategic vision (in consultation with the Editorial Board) as well as soliciting and cultivating high-quality content. The Editor-in-Chief reports to the CEO of the SOGC and works in collaboration with the Managing Editor to oversee some of the daily operations of the Journal such as managing the editorial office and peer-review process, providing editorial input, and making recommendations pertaining to improved dissemination of scientific material.DUTIES:1 - Develop a strategic vision for the Journal that will improve metrics, including the impact factor, and attract more high-quality content.2 - Publish original, important, well-documented, peer-reviewed articles on a diverse range of scientific topics of interest to the readership. This will include writing and/or soliciting editorial content for the Journal on a regular basis.3 - Manage the Journal's peer-review process, assign reviewers to manuscripts, and provide a final accept or reject decision in Editorial Manager.4 - Establish policies for:submission of manuscripts and criteria for authorship/contributorship;peer review, evaluation of decisions regarding publication, and reconsideration of rejected manuscripts;development of special issues;conflicts of interest and disclosures;membership and duties of the Editorial Board;allegations and findings of scientific misbehaviour and conduct.5 - Preside at bi-annual meetings of the Editorial Board and the executive committees.6 - Receive, review, and act on complaints from those involved in the publication process.7 - Build and maintain a strong relationship with the Journal's Publisher.8 - Represent the Editorial Board in negotiations with the Journal's Publisher.EDITORIAL FREEDOMThe Editor-in-Chief will have complete authority for determining the editorial content within the defined scope of the Journal and participate in the development of the advertising policy.QUALIFICATIONSBe a practicing physician with an academic affiliation.Be a member of the SOGC.Possess a general scientific knowledge of the fields covered in the Journal and be skilled in the arts of writing, editing, critical assessment, negotiation, and diplomacy.Have a proven and exemplary background in scientific communication.Have the ability to recognize and encourage publication of good science.Possess a good understanding of the job of Editor-in-Chief, particularly with respect to the peer-review process.Be innovative, objective, and forward-thinking.Have good administration skills,especially with respect to the delegation of responsibilities.Be able to work within fiscal restraints and with the guidance of the Publisher.Have interpersonal skills that reinforce the collegial atmosphere within the medical and scientific community.Ability to speak, read, and write in French is an asset.This is a contract position with the SOGC for a term of 5 years.
