Mō te Manatū Ahu Matua-About MPI The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) partners with New Zealand’s food and fibre sector to be the world’s most sustainable provider of high-value food and primary products. Kōrero mō te Tūranga- About the Role Reporting to the Deputy Director-General, Corporate Services, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), provides strategic leadership of both MPI’s financial and procurement services, a team of circa 80 people. Specifically, you will lead the financial strategy for MPI and ensure that day-to-day financial operations and services are delivered effectively, efficiently and accurately, meeting legislative requirements and the needs of both internal stakeholders, and external stakeholders such as the Treasury, Public Service Commission and Office of the Auditor General.  MPI relies on multiple revenue streams and third-party funding, to which the CFO will be pivotal in providing strategic financial and commercial advice, to support decision making on value for money, revenue, and cost optimisation. Principal responsibilities of this position include:
  • Financial strategy - Provide strategic financial advice and provide medium to long term financial plans to the Senior Leadership Team to ensure optimal management of MPI resources. 
  • Financial planning - Lead and manage MPI's financial planning responsibilities, including the budgeting, CAPEX and treasury functions.
  • Procurement and commercial management - Oversee MPI’s centralised procurement function and commercial management of significant contracts.
  • Financial management and services - Provide high quality, cost effective, financial management services, systems, processes and financial and business advice. 
  • Financial systems and improvement – Lead the strategy, planning and implementation of finance system and process improvements.
  • Leadership - Provide strategic leadership of the finance and procurement team within Corporate Services
Mōu- About You To be successful, you will be a proven experience in strategic leadership and management of a finance function, with credibility at the executive level, who can engage a diverse network of stakeholders around a vision, setting strategic direction while influencing the delivery of shared outcomes.  The ideal candidate will:
  • Be experienced in people leadership, management and development, including leading teams through change
  • Have an unwavering commitment to customer focus, internal and external
  • Have strong negotiation skills with the ability to influence others and encourage contributions from people over whom there is no management responsibility
  • Have strong analytical skills to support development of business cases and oversight/approval of commercial arrangements
  • Demonstrate the ability to find common ground and solve problems for the good of all
  • Be skilled in gathering, organising, and communicating information to a wide and varied group
  • Be a qualified Chartered Accountant
