A successful international agribusiness growing a wide range of berries, is recruiting a Nursery Production Manager at the nursery in George. The focus of this role will be to drive productivity while managing a staff complement of approximately 180 people. The Production Manager will report to the Nursery Operations Manager. Direct Reports: Production Technician/ Head Supervisor.
Role Overview
Ensure the efficient and effective execution of nursery operations. This role involves strategic staff planning, monitoring productivity, and ensuring tasks are completed to specification within set timelines. The Production Manager collaborates closely with the Nursery Manager, Greenhouse Manager, Maintenance Technician, Irrigation Technician and Clean Stock Manager to align staff resources with operational goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Staff Management
- Oversee and manage a team of approximately 180 staff.
- Plan and allocate staff for daily and weekly tasks based on schedules provided by the Nursery Manager, Greenhouse Manager, Clean Stock Manager, Maintenance Technician and Irrigation Technician.
- Ensure sufficient staffing levels through proactive recruitment and resource planning.
- Track and manage staff productivity, implementing systems to monitor individual and team performance.
- Task Management
- Develop and implement a labour portal where managers can log tasks 1–2 weeks in advance. This portal will serve as a central planning tool to forecast labour needs.
- Review and interpret task schedules provided 1–2 weeks in advance via the task portal.
- Ensure all tasks are completed on time and meet quality specifications.
- Provide clear direction and expectations to the Head Nursery Supervisor and staff.
3.Health, Safety, and Discipline
- Enforce workplace health and safety standards, conducting regular checks and training.
- Handle staff disciplinary processes and resolve disputes in collaboration with HR.
- Promote staff well-being, ensuring a positive and productive work environment.
4.Efficiency and Productivity
- Develop and implement strategies to optimize efficiency and resource utilization.
- Set benchmarks for task completion and introduce incentives for high performance.
- Continuously review processes to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Communication and Reporting
- Maintain open communication with all managers and technicians.
- Provide regular updates on task progress, staffing challenges, and productivity outcomes.
- Use the task portal to track progress and manage updates effectively.
Candidate Requirements:
- A tertiary qualification in agriculture, horticulture, plant production will be an advantage.
- At least 3 years’ experience working in a horticultural/nursery environment in a supervisory/managerial role.
- Well organised and ability to plan activities.
- Labour management experience.
- Good communication skills, speaking of English and Xhosa will be to the candidate’s advantage.
- Computer literacy with Microsoft and knowledge of production/operational software programmes.
