As a Mechanical Engineer (known in the Navy as a Marine Engineer Officer), you'll be the ship's technical expert on marine systems. You'll be responsible for ensuring the ship's mechanical engineering plant runs smoothly across power, propulsion and auxiliary systems. You will be a trusted member of the ship's Command Team providing technical advice and recommendations so that the mission can be achieved. In this dynamic engineering role, you'll be given a lot of responsibility early in your career. Not only will you be in charge as an engineer, but you'll also be managing a team of highly trained marine technicians. Being willing to step into a role as a leader and mentor is an essential part of what it takes to excel in this position. Responsibilities: Mechanical Engineers are responsible for a variety of systems and structures. Some of these include, but aren't limited to:
- Ship structures like tanks, compartments and masts
- Propulsion systems
- Electrical generation and distribution
- Domestic and associated mechanical services
- Main and auxiliary machinery
- Diesel and gas turbine engines
- Automatic and remote-control systems
- Hydraulic systems
- Air conditioning and refrigeration systems
- Ventilation systems
- Project management
- Operational planning
