Duties and Responsibilities: Provide personalized coordinated care, support and treatment for patients and families. Treat people with dignity, compassion, and respect. Involve patients, families and caregivers by providing them with education and resources for offering optimal support to promote recovery. Perform venous and capillary punctures to obtain blood samples for analysis from neonatal, pediatrics and adult patients. Adhere to policies and procedures, quality assurance program, safety, infection control and environment standards in the performance of specimen collection, processing, receiving and distribution. Ensure that the standards established by the Joint Commission International, College of American Pathologist are met in all respects within the area of responsibility. Assist in the orientation and training of new phlebotomists and receptionist staff. Assure that adequate supplies are available at all times, and maintain inventory of all material used. Follow an effective written and oral communication system that assures prompt and accurate patient receiving, specimen collection and effective exchange of information with laboratory sections, other hospital departments and referral laboratory services. Perform inpatient specimen collection rounds. Receive collected samples into the laboratory information system after ensuring that all sample and patient data is correct. Process collected samples and prepare them for testing. Distribute processed samples to the appropriate laboratory sections. Prepare and package samples sent to referral laboratory. Provide specimen, patient preparation and collection information and guidelines to nursing and medical staff. Maintain a helpful and supportive relationship with peers, hospital staff and patients. Ensure that all patient contacts are conducted in a calm and professional manner. Maintain confidentiality of matters relating to patients. Maintain the chain of command based on established policies and procedures. Contribute to the safety of patients and staff by being cognizant of potential hazards and reporting concerns or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor. Ensure accuracy of specimen collection, specimen receiving, specimen transportation and patient results handling procedures. Adhere to all quality control/improvement policies and procedures. Clean equipment and working areas as per infection control policies. Comply and submit periodic activity and statistical reports as required. Ensure proper function of section instruments, equipment and other assets. Perform other tasks and duties within the scope of the knowledge, skills, and experience required for the job, as assigned by the immediate supervisor. Consistently draw blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible. Record phlebotomy requisitions in logbook. Identify the patient - comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient's identification band before venipuncture is performed. Display courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff. Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Label and record all test tubes, log procedures, and file paperwork. Be knowledgeable about which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed - know test requirements. Follow Standard Precautions at all times. Dispose of all sharps in a rigid sharps container. Clean and supply venipuncture trays. Maintain work areas. Order supplies when needed. Treat patients with compassion and provide person-centered care. Instruct and educate patients on the process conducted in the extraction area and the turnaround time of the tests. QUALIFICATIONS: BS Degree, or Diploma (or equivalent in country of origin) in Medical Technology Phlebotomy. Must successfully complete the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health requirements for licensure. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: Two years in one or more of the laboratory services. Employment history must be continuous over the past four years. SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Proficient in using Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets. Works skillfully with the team. COMPETENCE: Knowledge in laboratory services. Ability to manage internal and external departmental communications. REQUIRED ATTITUDE TO PERFORM THE JOB: Proper, effective and compassionate communication. Has a positive attitude and specific ideas about the contributions planned to be implemented in the department. Consistently available and completes work on time. Strong communication skills with co-workers. Shows a supportive attitude toward change and is willing to try new ideas to achieve results. Demonstrates a willingness to work well with others and collaborates effectively.
