The role will involve working with young people with cancer aged 13 to 25 years, within a range of Paediatric and TYA specific clinical areas. Main duties of the job identifying appropriate individual, group and peer support activities to meet the needs of young people. Manage and run age appropriate activities, supporting the psycho-social needs of young people with cancer aged 13-25 years, through distraction and this will include: Taking referrals from clinical staff and identifying appropriate individual, group and peer-support activities to meet the needs of young people. Coordinating, and providing diversionary 1:1 and group activities in the hospital setting ensuring they are well-planned, appropriate and safe for all participants. Taking the lead on design and organisation of agreed patient group activities outside the hospital setting, with input from paediatric and TYA team colleagues as appropriate to ensure they are well-planned, appropriate and safe for all participants. Contributing to the design and implementation of programmes to support transition, both in relation to age/development and stages of the cancer care pathway. Developing age-appropriate methods for involving teenagers and young adults in the evaluation and development of services, taking a key role in supporting their involvement. Contributing to the development and use of communication technologies to meet the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer. This role may include working across the hospital site within the NHS Trust. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Diploma Level (or above) qualification in Youth Work with JNC A Youth Work qualification at Level 3 or significant youth work experience including leading projects / teams Desirable criteria Post-graduate level qualifications in Youth Work Training relevant to area of work, e.g. youth participation, professional boundaries, risk management, anti-oppressive practice, advanced communication skills, co-creation, etc. Membership / registration with a youth work group / body Experience Essential criteria Significant experience of youth work within age range 13-25 Proven ability in project work involving youth participation / engagement Experience of organising and running a range of youth-focused activities including residential and non-residential group and peer support activities Experience of undertaking risk assessment and addressing risk / safeguarding issues for 1:1 and group activities with young people Desirable criteria Budget management experience Experience of work with hard to reach / marginalised young people Experience of working with vulnerable children or adults who fit within the age range Knowledge Essential criteria Confident of own knowledge, aware of learning needs, seeks guidance as appropriate Desirable criteria Particular knowledge that will contribute to post, e.g. creative, music, physical activity, communication technology Skills Essential criteria Excellent communication skills, engagement and cooperation with young people from a range of ages and backgrounds Ability to coordinate, organise and facilitate a programme of 1:1 and group activities that benefit young people Awareness of child protection / safeguarding law and effective disclosure management Able to communicate effectively with a range of professionals Able to organise own workload IT skills (Word processing, email and internet) Desirable criteria Negotiation skills Particular skills that will contribute to post, e.g. creative, music, physical activity, communication technology Additional Requirements Essential criteria The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of Safe, Kind, Excellent.
