The OpportunityLocation: Lakeside, NS - Halifax - On-siteCompany, Department: Nova Scotia Power, Power Production - Hydro, Wind & SolarWe are currently looking for a Senior Dam Safety Engineer/Engineering Specialist to join our Power Production - Hydro, Wind & Solar team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Dam Safety & Wind, you will provide expertise and assistance on any matter related to dam safety at Nova Scotia Power. Key elements of this role include:Long range planning and implementation of dam safety improvements to ensure regulatory compliance and risk management.Plan, develop, implement, and maintain the Dam Safety Management System.Review, develop and maintain the Dam Emergency Plans, and Dam Safety Risk Registry.Provide strategic direction and support budget and resource planning for dam safety related work.Provide technical review and guidance as it relates to the engineering standards NSPI will use in the assessment, refurbishment, redevelopment, or replacement of water retaining and hydraulic control structures.Review and provide feedback on significant modifications to dam/water retaining structures within NSPI's Hydro assets.Participate in dam inspections, review & comment on dam inspection reports, and maintain a documented deficiency list for all dam structures.Use diplomacy and strong communication, presentation and relationship building skills to create and maintain collaboration among internal and external stakeholders.Lead and collaborate with diverse teams.Act as a technical resource to support regulatory filings.Lead Dam Safety Reviews (DSR's), updates to Operation Maintenance & Surveillance Manuals (OM&S) and Dam Emergency Plans (DEP's)Keep abreast of industry development, best practices, standards, regulations, and codes, including the Canadian Dam Safety Guidelines.Perform or review, equipment inspection and condition assessments.Provide leadership support to NS Power's Hydro sites as required during emergency events.You will be responsible for your personal safety, that of co-workers, and those under your direction by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives. These skills will make you successful:To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:The successful candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a minimum of 5 years of related industry experience.A master's degree or specialization in geotechnical, hydrotechnical, or structural engineering.Strong technical knowledge and detailed design capabilities in dams and hydraulic structures.Ability to interface with other disciplines and understand the electrical, civil-structural, geotechnical, and mechanical design aspects and drawings of a project.Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.Proven record of project management.Effective verbal and written communications skills in English, with demonstrated competent report writing skills.Experience undertaking dam safety condition assessments and inspections.You must be, or eligible to be, a member of Engineers Nova ScotiaAbility to travel to Hydro dam sites throughout the province and have a valid driver's license.Experience leading or completing dam safety reviews, flood studies, managing consultants and providing expertise related to Dam Safety Practices.Experience directly related to management of dam safety, dam instrumentation, hydrology, hydraulic modeling and the detailed design and project management of civil and hydraulic structures.Experience with implementing risk assessments and mitigations for Public Safety Around Dams.Experience with preparation and review of engineering technical specifications.Ability to prepare and interpret engineering drawings and reports.Experience with drafting and GIS software would be an asset.Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of programs.We understand that experience comes in many forms, and we're dedicated to adding new perspectives to the team.
