The Organisation The vision of Mental Health Reform (MHR) is of an Ireland where people experiencing mental health difficulties can recover their well-beingand live a full life in their community. MHR aims to be the unifying voicethat drives progressivereform of mental healthsupports. MHR operates in accordance with its Financial Procedures Manual and the Charities Regulator’s Governance Code for Charities. MHR prepares their annual accounts using the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP). The Role The Board of Mental Health Reform is seeking a suitable individual for the role of Expert Director (Finance). The role includes chairing Mental Health Reform’s Finance and Audit Committee and reporting to the Board of Directors on the financial budgeting and management systems. This role involves managing budgets, financial planning, reporting, risk management, and providing strategic guidance to support decision-making and long-term organisational goals. Specific duties of the Expert Director (Finance) include:

  • Chairing the Finance and Audit Committee.
  • Presenting recommendations of the Committee to the Board of Directors.
  • Reviewing financial procedures.
  • Liaising with the CEO regarding financial matters.
  • Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and ensuring any recommendations of the auditors are implemented.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations, laws, and standards, including tax obligations and audit requirements.
  • Support financial planning, forecasting, and risk assessment processes.
Essential experience
  • Good communications and interpersonal skills
  • A willingness to be contacted on an ad hoc basis and the ability to ensure decisions are taken and followed up.
  • A relevant qualification in finance, accounting or auditing and a working knowledge of SORP and compliance requirements.
Desirable experience
  • Experience working in or with the charity or NGO sector.
  • Experience of IT/technology would be an advantage.
  • Experience in fundraising or developing initiatives to secure funding from external stakeholders.
Charities Regulator’s General Duties of a Charity Trustee
  • Comply with the charity’s governing document.
  • Ensure the charity is complying with its charitable purpose for the public benefit.
  • Act in the best interest of the charity
  • Act with reasonable care and skill
  • Manage the assets of your charity.
Board Meetings There are six board meetings a year plus the AGM. Board meetings are scheduled for 6.00pm to 8.00pm and take place online. The board does, however, endeavour to meet in person once a year. The anticipated time commitment for this role is estimated at four hours per month. Board Committees: There are three board committees: Finance & Audit, Nominations, and Fundraising. The Finance and Audit Committee meets six times a year, one week prior to the board meeting.
