The Registered Nurse in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is responsible for delivering high-quality care to patients requiring continuous monitoring and interventions. The RN provides patient assessments, implements and evaluates nursing care plans, administers medications, and educates patients and families on healthcare management. This role involves working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, ensuring patient safety, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Key Responsibilities :
  • Patient Care :
    • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including physical and emotional evaluations.
    • Monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, respiratory status, and other clinical parameters.
    • Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products according to physician orders.
    • Perform nursing interventions, including wound care, catheterization, and more.
    • Manage patients with complex medical conditions, such as cardiac, respiratory, neurological, or post-operative conditions.
  • Documentation & Communication :
    • Document patient care, progress, and assessments in electronic medical records (EMR) accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, and families to coordinate care and ensure patient understanding.
    • Provide clear and concise handoff communication during shift changes.
  • Collaboration & Teamwork :
    • Work closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement patient care plans.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to patient care discussions.
    • Serve as a resource and mentor to junior nursing staff and other team members.
  • Patient Education :
    • Educate patients and families regarding the nature of the illness, treatment options, and aftercare instructions.
    • Provide discharge planning and ensure patients and families understand home care instructions.
  • Clinical Skills & Competency :
    • Utilize advanced clinical skills such as telemetry monitoring, ECG interpretation, and IV management.
    • Follow protocols for patient safety, infection control, and emergency response.
    • Recognize and respond to changes in patient condition, including performing rapid interventions when necessary.
  • Professional Development :
    • Maintain current RN licensure and complete required continuing education.
    • Stay informed on current practices, trends, and technologies in healthcare.
    • Participate in performance improvement initiatives and quality assurance activities.
Qualifications :
  • Education : Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (ADN or BSN) from an accredited nursing program.
  • Licensure : Current RN license in the state of practice.
  • Certifications :
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification required.
    • Certification in Progressive Care Nursing (PCCN) preferred.
  • Experience :
    • Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience in a hospital setting; experience in a PCU or critical care unit preferred.
    • Experience with telemetry, critical care monitoring, and cardiac patients is highly desirable.
