Job details

The Shire of Wandering is a small rural authority located 120km to the south-east of Perth and a short scenic drive off the Albany Highway. It is an agriculturally based Shire with both crops and livestock and thanks to a very safe climate has high production levels of both. The area sown to crops of wheat, barley, oats, canola and lupins have increased over recent years but livestock diversification particularly of sheep and cattle continues. Various other businesses including transport, grain storage with further processing and mechanical servicing provide a strong local economy. Wandering has a growing light industrial area providing an important employment opportunity along with the bauxite and gold mines that operate in their neighbouring Shire. A very popular caravan park operated by the Shire is fostering a growing tourist business for the town and vineyard operators. Residents of Wandering enjoy its quiet serenity and a sense of remoteness yet in less than an hour away, have access to all the amenities and facilities that exist in the outer metropolitan area of Perth. The choice of living areas in the Shire from townsite to the various rural residential properties has proven to be very popular. Wandering also has a very proud community driven by strong volunteering support. A rare opportunity has presented itself to appoint a suitably qualified Chief Executive Officer for a term of up to 5 years. Reporting to, and working in close collaboration with the Shire President, Councillors and Council staff, the CEO's key responsibilities include:

  • Lead and manage a motivated and engaged team
  • General oversight of the delivery of services and operations of Council
  • Delivery of the Strategic Community Plan and Business Plan
  • Sound financial management
  • Execution and delivery of agreed projects
  • Comply with the governance and legislated requirements of Council
  • Community and stakeholder engagement
  • Source and deliver grant funding opportunities
  • Establish an economic development and tourism strategy
  • Provide sound and trusted advice to the Shire President and Councillors
Ideally, you will be a Local Government generalist with CEO or Senior Management experience. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of working and/or living within a rural community. It is essential that you have sound financial acumen, a strategic mindset and a strong understanding of governance, compliance and local government legislation. Through excellent communication skills, you will be expected to be an effective advocate, negotiator and leader within the community. The ability to generate grant funding and build a sound economic development platform for the region will be well received. Being a Band 4 Council, a total salary package (inclusive of superannuation) of between $156,780 and $240,396 will be negotiated with the successful candidate. In addition to this, you will be provided with an excellent well-located 4-bedroom home with swimming pool and the use of a fully expensed executive level vehicle for work and private use.
