About the Victorian Institute of Sport: The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) was set up to assist the development of Victoria’s best athletes. It was established in 1990 by the State Government as a private trustee company, with its Board of Directors appointed by the Victorian Minister for Sport. The VIS is located at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The VIS headquarters completed a renovation in February 2023, providing a brand new workspace for athletes and staff. It is a non-residential institute, which utilises Melbourne’s outstanding sporting facilities, to allow high performance athletes to live and train in Melbourne, the sporting capital of Australia. The VIS operates in partnership with National Sporting Organisations and State Sporting Associations to deliver high performance daily training environments (DTEs) for sports and athletes in support of the National High Performance Sport Strategy outcomes. Our facility and staff help prepare and support future and current Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth Games and World Champion athletes. About the role:

As the Victorian Institute of Sport embarks on the exciting journey toward the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we are seeking a world class, highly collaborative, inspiring and motivating Director High Performance. This is a rare opportunity for an impressive individual to provide outstanding leadership and management across all aspects of VIS programs, which will directly impact and support Victoria’s athletes to become world’s best athletes and people. As a key member of the VIS’ Executive Leadership Team the Director High Performance will be directly responsible for overseeing and delivering on the Performance outcomes of the VIS in relation to Australia’s WinWell 2032+ strategy and beyond. Reporting to the newly appointed CEO, the role’s primary purpose will be to:
  1. Understand, adapt and advise world leading practice in high performance sport to achieve success for Victorian athletes domestically and at major events and games.
  2. Play an influential and impactful role in shaping and driving sport programs and athlete investment across the VIS.
  3. Provide leadership and direction enabling coaches, managers and athletes to fulfill their ultimate potential and high-performance outcomes.
The role involves work with key external stakeholders and strong working relationships with Games Partners (such as the Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia, Commonwealth Games Australia), National and State Sporting Organisations and the Australian Institute of Sport/Australian Sports Commission. The role will also work closely with other similar roles across the national institute network with a high degree of sharing, collaborating and learning expected in line with the National 2032+ Win Well High-Performance Sport Strategy. Required Skills & Experience
  • 8+ years experience in developing elite athletes and coaches, including leading, devising and implementing successful programs in a sport or Institute program; demonstrating a proven knowledge of demands, pressure and the needs of elite athletes and coaches.
  • Demonstrated experience of working within and supporting a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • An understanding of the challenges of the Australia and international sporting environment and a commitment to affecting positive change and challenging the status quo where required.
  • An ability to work constructively and innovatively with others, to motivate, provide direction, inspire and influence.
  • Highly developed conceptual and problem-solving skills, with a sharp eye for seizing opportunities others may miss and always asking how we can do things better.
  • Experience in leading and managing a team, including facilitating meetings/workshops, conducting performance reviews, coaching individuals and budget preparation/monitoring and reporting.
  • Strong verbal and written communications and ability to use Microsoft Office and internet applications.

  • A passion and ability to connect and inspire at every level, from board/executive members to external stakeholders.
  • Previous experience across a diverse range of sports both nationally and internationally.
  • Ability to lead by example, including driving high-quality standards and completion of training and compliance requirements and other VIS processes as directed.
  • An external network that you can draw inspiration from and leverage to advance VIS strategy and athlete outcomes.
