Position Summary The Shift Chemist will be responsible for monitoring the operating parameters necessary to achieve the optimum chemical conditions, both for current operations and to maintain the integrity of the power and water plant processes over the longer term. The principal chemist should have a detailed understanding of the chemical and environmental matters associated with the operations of Combined Cycle Plant, Desalinations Plant and a wide range of Auxiliary Equipment. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Safety, Quality & Environment: • Responsible to ensure compliance of IMS. • Perform all operational activities in line with Safety and Environment Management System. • Report unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Plant Operations: • Perform periodic sampling/calibration of lab instruments and checks of plant process water, sea water inlet and return (outfall) water and maintains a record of results. • Carry out routine Lab analysis of the plant process steam water cycle, Demin water, distillate, potable water and other random samples. • Knowledge on Co2 plant and Electro chlorination Plant. • Monitor analytical results and take corrective and preventive actions. • Support and organize procedures for specialized acid cleaning, demister cleaning and degassifier cleaning etc. • Investigate and provide advice to operations about plant chemistry related issues and shutdown inspections along with report preparation (MED, Boilers, Condenser etc.). • Perform Lab analysis techniques, provide reports and recommend necessary remedial measures on material compatibility related issues to operations and maintenance teams. • Coordinates with external Labs for analysis results. • Responsible for maintaining material safety data sheets for all the chemicals used in Plant. • Responsible for managing and maintaining the lab chemicals, inventory and bulk chemicals consumption monitoring on a routine basis. • Boiler chemical cleaning and preservation.
- Raising Work Orders Regarding Defects and Abnormal Conditions: • Raise work orders in the system to record plant defects and follow-up on the progress of rectification work.
- Management of Plant Chemicals: • Arranging and safe storage of all chemicals used on the plant and ensure chemical top-ups/unloading of tankers without any incident.
- Ensure the Portable Water Quality: • To ensure the export quality of potable water to comply with predefined Regulations. • Completion of shift reports to record and maintain consistent quality of potable water.
- Vendor Relations: • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with local service providers.
- Policies & Procedures: • Compliance to relevant operational procedures and instructions to ensure work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
- Good chemistry or chemical engineering foundation and practical knowledge of how it applies to modern power plant and desalination plant technologies.
- Specific knowledge of: Cooling water chemistry, GT Evaporative Coolers, Closed Cooling Water system, HRSG, Multi Effect Desalination (MED), Distillate/Potable Water quality, DM plant Operation & Regeneration and related monitoring/dosing control.
- Ensuring compliance to legal obligations for monitoring and controlling potable water, ground water quality, stack emissions and effluents.
- Update routine standard operating procedures/ COSHH assessment/ Risk Assessment.
- Provide training/Toolbox Talk related to bulk chemicals to Chemical Helpers.
- Performs routine chemical analysis, compare these with standards, prepares reports and performs or advises on chemical dosing.
- Liaises closely with the operational team during any plant start-up, taking frequent water samples, performing the necessary chemical dosing and advising the shift staff regarding chemical process control across the range of plant.
- Keeps logbooks and maintain reports.
- Ensures compliance with all environmental health and safety regulations.
- Looks after technical and quality standard for all lab and sampling activity and prepare reagents.
