Eagarthóir Gaeilge/Irish Language Editor - Channel

Channel is seeking an Eagarthóir Gaeilge/Irish Language Editor to advance our work with the Irish language, building on the integration of Irish into our publishing programme begun by our first Eagarthóir Gaeilge, Aisling Ní Choibheanaigh Nic Eoin, in 2023 and 2024. The initial contract for this role will be from March to November 2025, with potential for renewal. As a leading platform for eco-writing in Ireland, Channel has sought since the introduction of a bilingual element into practice to provide a platform that honours and responds creatively to the potential inherent in indigenous languages to deepen our relationship with the living world. Each issue of our journal features a selection of poetry and/or prose in Irish, with each piece published either monolingually or, with its author’s permission, accompanied by an English translation drafted with care by our Eagarthóir Gaeilge to reach an international readership. Aside from working closely with writers on editorial and translation processes, the Eagarthóir Gaeilge will be responsible for deepening Channel‘s connections with Irish-speaking creative communities, pursuing new audiences and funding opportunities for our Irish-language work, and seeking out new ways of exploring, in the company of our growing community of writers, artists and readers, the close connections between language and ecology. We look forward to welcoming a new candidate who will make this role their own. This is a flexible position well-suited to a candidate balancing multiple commitments – aside from regular team meetings at mutually agreed times, the Eagarthóir Gaeilge will be free to fulfil the duties of the role on their own schedule. We expect the role to require 2–10 hours of work per week, varying with Channel‘s production timeline. The role will be offered on a contract for services basis, and is open to all applicants resident within the island of Ireland and legally entitled to take up freelance work. You must have access to a laptop and an internet connection. Responsibilities will include:

1. Logging, reading and selecting between submissions of written work in Irish
2. Collaborating with writers on edits and, where desired by the author, on translation of pieces into English for bilingual publication
3. Answering email queries and managing communication with writers and other stakeholders who work through Irish
4. Translating copy into Irish for the Channel website, social media and other communication channels
5. Writing an editorial for inclusion in each issue of Channel
6. In collaboration with the full Channel team, designing and implementing a communications strategy that will maximise the impact of Channel‘s work with the Irish language, ensuring a breadth of high-quality submissions and a wide readership for our writers’ work
7. Developing new partnerships with funders, festivals and other collaborators to maximise the impact of our work with the Irish language
8. Representing Channel at events conducted through Irish and English

The successful candidate will:

1. Be a fluent Irish speaker with confidence reading, writing and speaking Irish to a high level and translating between Irish and English
2. Be familiar with the Irish-language publishing and arts landscape, as well as with Channel‘s work to date
3. Have a proven interest in socially engaged arts practices, language preservation and/or environmental action and an understanding of Channel‘s mission and values
4. Have some experience or training, however informal, in editorial work and/or translation
5. Have strong communication skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to tight deadlines, and a genuine drive to grow the profile of eco-writing in Irish

Some or all of the following would also be helpful:

1. Formal training or professional experience in proofreading and/or copyediting
2. Experience in literary translation
3. Familiarity with Google Drive, Google Docs and Google Sheets
4. Experience in website management, particularly in WordPress
5. Experience in marketing copywriting (including social media content, website content and press releases)
