Job details

Job Description We are seeking a skilled and motivated Lab Specialist to support a groundbreaking research project focused on genetic manipulation of primordial germ cells (PGCs) to modify plumage color in falcons. This position will contribute to the development of novel techniques for modifying plumage color in falcons through CRISPR/Cas9 technology aiming to produce falcons with white or light-colored plumage. The role involves working with the Biology Department to support research in gene editing, PGC culture, and embryology. The successful candidate will assist in executing laboratory protocols, preparing experimental setups, and ensuring smooth day-to-day lab operations. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's or Master's degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, or a related field. Hands-on experience in laboratory-based molecular biology techniques, including PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, and gene expression analysis. Experience with cell culture, transfection techniques, and general laboratory equipment. Familiarity with CRISPR/Cas9 technology and gene editing practices. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams. Attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot experimental issues. Preferred Qualification Previous experience with avian species, particularly chickens or falcons, in a research or laboratory setting. Knowledge of embryology and PGC manipulation techniques. Familiarity with cryopreservation techniques for germ cells or stem cells. Experience with Western blotting, flow cytometry, or other cell analysis techniques. Key Responsibilities: Assist in genome editing procedures using CRISPR/Cas9 to modify melanin-related genes, such as MC1R, in avian PGCs. Support the isolation, culture, and transfection of PGCs from both chicken and falcon embryos. Conduct routine laboratory tasks including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR amplification, gene expression analysis, and Western blotting. Assist with phenotypic screening of transgenic falcons and monitor the success of gene modifications. Help optimize methods for PGC cryopreservation and cell storage. Maintain accurate and organized records of experimental procedures and results. Perform general laboratory maintenance, ensuring that all equipment is functioning properly and that the lab is stocked with necessary supplies. Support the preparation of experimental protocols and help train students and junior researchers in laboratory techniques. Ensure compliance with all biosafety and ethical protocols, assisting in obtaining necessary approvals for animal-based research. Assist in the preparation of scientific publications and regular project progress reports. #J-18808-Ljbffr
