Position Summary As a Green Hydrogen Plant Design Engineer at CIR, you will play a pivotal role in driving the development and execution of utility-scale hydrogen projects, collaborating across operations, sales, and technology teams to expand our hydrogen project portfolio. Your responsibilities will include designing and delivering hydrogen plants, managing technical feasibility studies, and ensuring project success across energy, transport, and industrial sectors. Additionally, you will contribute to executing market strategies that support CIR's growth in the Energy Transition market, while leading innovative projects that integrate hydrogen management and downstream applications. Core Responsibilities Feasibility Analysis & Project Prioritization
  • Conduct feasibility studies for existing projects within the portfolio to support prioritization.
  • Evaluate the technical-economic viability and competitiveness of proposed solutions.
Hydrogen Infrastructure Development
  • Scope and manage technical studies and feasibility analysis for hydrogen production, storage, transport, and downstream uses in energy, transport, and industrial sectors.
  • Design and develop green hydrogen production facilities, including electrolysers, storage systems, and auxiliary systems.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, codes, and safety standards for hydrogen production and handling.
Design and Engineering
  • Create and oversee detailed designs for hydrogen production plants, focusing on renewable energy integration (solar, wind).
  • Develop and review Basis of Design, site plot plans, major assumptions/specifications, and Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and Materials Takeoff (MTO).
  • Generate and analyze Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and process flow analyses.
  • Establish and manage electrical design standards for hydrogen plants, including substation and power distribution systems.
Electrical & Mechanical Systems Design
  • Conduct electrical studies such as short circuit analysis, harmonic analysis, arc flash protection, and grounding.
  • Design and size hydrogen storage tanks, compressors, and distribution pipelines.
  • Prepare basic design documents, CAD models, and 2D drawings for mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Define and create technical documentation, including specifications, engineering calculations, and P&IDs.
Technology Evaluation & Procurement
  • Research and evaluate potential partners and suppliers for hydrogen infrastructure projects.
  • Create and evaluate procurement inquiries, ensuring technical and economic alignment with project goals.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that process designs comply with safety, environmental, industry standards and regulations and quality standards.
  • Prepare equipment technical specifications and collaborate with vendors to ensure compliance with project requirements.
Collaboration & Team Leadership
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (electrical, instrumentation, automation, testing, safety, industrial engineering, and quality) to ensure optimal integration of design solutions.
  • Provide cost and design advisory for electrical systems in sales and execution projects.
  • Lead design reviews and oversee the optimization of components’ performance and costs.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
  • Stay updated on advancements in hydrogen production technologies and recommend best practices.
  • Define and analyze design scenarios, including system configurations, plant layouts, and cost analyses.
  • Drive innovation in process design and renewable energy integration for hydrogen projects.
Education Requirements Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline is required. Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering is preferred. Technical Skills and Experience Software Proficiency:
  • Proficiency in CAD software.
  • Experience with EDMS.
  • Familiarity with FEM simulations.
  • Knowledge of weld assemblies design tools.
  • Expertise in plant and piping design software.
Project Management:
  • Experience in managing design projects from conception to implementation
  • Ability to coordinate with other engineers and stakeholders
Renewable Energy Systems: Understanding of solar energy systems and their integration into existing infrastructure Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience in hydrogen-related technologies, including electrolysis and liquefaction.
  • Proven experience with industrial rectifier systems and/or high-voltage (HV) systems.
  • Familiarity with renewable energy integration (solar, wind) into hydrogen production plants.
  • Experience in preparing and managing technical documentation, including PFDs, P&IDs, and engineering calculations.
  • Experience in the preparation and evaluation of short-circuit and harmonic studies is an advantage.
Psychosocial Skills /Human Skills/Behavioural Skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Project Management experience a plus.
  • Advance knowledge about North American utility codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, IEC, NFPA, NEC codes)
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to take ideas and run with them from concept to conclusion.
  • In-depth knowledge of the hydrogen sector (green/blue/grey), including policy, regulations, and technologies related to production, storage, transport, and usage.
  • Proven expertise in hydrogen process design and infrastructure projects, such as production, refuelling, and storage.
  • Advanced understanding of HV/EHV substation design and power distribution systems for hydrogen plants.
  • Good technical and design knowledge of alkaline (AEL) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis processes. Familiarity with anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolysis (SOEL) is a plus.
  • Technical understanding of clean energy business processes
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills and high attention to detail, with the ability to present to corporate leaders.
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical and feasibility studies for complex projects.
  • Excellence in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
