Engineering Manager
Job details
Job description: About Us: CultureMonkey is shaking up the HR Tech SaaS space. We’re a fast-growing, innovative startup focused on building tools that redefine employee engagement and company culture. As we expand our product offerings and explore new business opportunities, we’re looking for a self-starter who thrives in high-speed environments and loves solving complex challenges. If you’re excited about making a real impact in a startup where your ideas can take shape, this is the place for you! The Ideal Person: A pragmatic, AI-first thinker and OCD-organized Engineering Manager who thrives in startups, values simplicity over complexity, and can lead a mighty team to ship swift, impactful releases. You’re a 360-degree engineer at heart (backend, frontend, DevOps) turned manager, with a knack for balancing customer needs with technical sanity. You’ve architected systems handling thousands of requests/minute and built conversational AI/agent-driven products that scale. Key Responsibilities:
- Own the Engineering Vision: Partner with the founder to refine the product roadmap and break it into actionable engineering milestones. No overengineering: Champion simple, maintainable solutions that scale.
- AI-First Mindset: Think conversational AI, agents, and automation to solve user problems intelligently.
- Lead by Doing: Mentor the engineering team across full-stack and DevOps. Be involved during critical phases—code reviews, architecture discussions, and firefighting. Motivate engineers through 1:1s, skill development plans, and ownership of critical projects.
- Ship with Discipline: Enforce engineering best practices: automated testing, CI/CD, clean documentation, secure deployments, and agile releases (think daily/weekly iterations, not monthly). Design systems that handle high-throughput workloads (10k+ RPM) without overcomplicating.
- Project & Process Management: Own and drive the engineering roadmap, ensuring timely and efficient delivery. Establish and refine processes for sprint planning, release cycles, and technical debt management.
- Be the Voice of Reason: Push back on scope creep. Interface with customers for infosec reviews, feature feedback, and bug triage—no BS, just clarity.
- Build Culture (Walk the Talk): Foster a calm, collaborative environment where engineers feel heard and empowered. Celebrate small wins.
- People-First Leadership: Prioritize team morale, growth, and bonding. Turn junior devs into rockstars.
- 5-8 years as a full-stack engineer (Node.js/Rails/Python/React/AWS or similar). You can spot a bad abstraction from a mile away. Prior EM experience is a great add.
- Hate overengineering. You would refactor a “clever” solution into something maintainable.
- Hands-on with conversational AI, agents (e.g., Langchain), or RAG models.
- Delivered swift, iterative releases without compromising quality.
- Architected systems for high traffic and low latency.
- Great at communication. Write docs so clear even the intern gets it. Explain technical tradeoffs to non-tech stakeholders without jargon.
- Exceptional organizational skills, with an OCD-like focus on keeping things structured and efficient.
- A hands-on people-first leader who motivates engineers, resolves conflicts, and accelerates career growth.
- A balanced customer mindset, capable of managing expectations and trade-offs effectively.
