Reptile Keeper
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Involved in reptiles husbandry (including conditioning and enrichment).
- Maintenance of exhibit holding and public areas of the assigned department.
- Reporting to supervisor.
- Excellent animal care:
- Feeds, waters, and cleans quarters of reptile collection.
- Adds vitamins or medication to food as prescribed by Vets under supervision of supervisor.
- Cleans animal quarters using rake, water hose, and disinfectant.
- Observes animals to detect illnesses and injuries and notifies supervisor or vet health care department of findings.
- Involved in transfers of animals from one enclosure to another for purposes such as breeding, treatment, rearrangement of exhibits, or shipping if needed.
- Ability to build relationships with animals.
- Sets temperature and humidity controls of quarters as specified.
- Handles, captures, and restrains animals.
- Manages hygiene to prevent disease.
- Inspects enclosures daily for security and reports required containment repairs; determines the safety of exhibits before shifting animals to exhibits; secures animals in holding when containment is questionable.
- Engages in visitor interactions including scheduled on-ground talks to guests and answers visitors' questions concerning animals' habits or zoo operations.
- Completes daily worksheets listing amount of food eaten, etc.
- Maintains the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures to ensure safety for the animals and visitors.
- Participates in and supports collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research, and education.
- Actively fosters constructive attitudes and a team orientation among staff.
- Supports the goals of EPZ departments, collection plan, strategic and Master Plans.
- Oversees activities of interns and volunteers.
- Participates in workshops and training sessions if needed to improve job knowledge and professional development.
- May assist vets in treatment of animals for illnesses and injuries.
- May assist animal trainer or instructor in presentation of programs, shows, or lectures.
- Other duties as assigned.
