Reptile Keeper

Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Involved in reptiles husbandry (including conditioning and enrichment).
  2. Maintenance of exhibit holding and public areas of the assigned department.
  3. Reporting to supervisor.
  4. Excellent animal care:
    1. Feeds, waters, and cleans quarters of reptile collection.
    2. Adds vitamins or medication to food as prescribed by Vets under supervision of supervisor.
    3. Cleans animal quarters using rake, water hose, and disinfectant.
    4. Observes animals to detect illnesses and injuries and notifies supervisor or vet health care department of findings.
    5. Involved in transfers of animals from one enclosure to another for purposes such as breeding, treatment, rearrangement of exhibits, or shipping if needed.
    6. Ability to build relationships with animals.
    7. Sets temperature and humidity controls of quarters as specified.
    8. Handles, captures, and restrains animals.
    9. Manages hygiene to prevent disease.
    10. Inspects enclosures daily for security and reports required containment repairs; determines the safety of exhibits before shifting animals to exhibits; secures animals in holding when containment is questionable.
    11. Engages in visitor interactions including scheduled on-ground talks to guests and answers visitors' questions concerning animals' habits or zoo operations.
    12. Completes daily worksheets listing amount of food eaten, etc.
    13. Maintains the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures to ensure safety for the animals and visitors.
    14. Participates in and supports collaborative efforts pertaining to the care of the collection including training, enrichment, research, and education.
    15. Actively fosters constructive attitudes and a team orientation among staff.
    16. Supports the goals of EPZ departments, collection plan, strategic and Master Plans.
    17. Oversees activities of interns and volunteers.
    18. Participates in workshops and training sessions if needed to improve job knowledge and professional development.
    19. May assist vets in treatment of animals for illnesses and injuries.
    20. May assist animal trainer or instructor in presentation of programs, shows, or lectures.
    21. Other duties as assigned.
