-Develop, administer and oversee the OR inventory control system which include medical supplies, equipment and any other materials. -Plan and manage budget for OR in line with census and needs. -Maintain appropriate staffing levels to provide safe patient care. -Lead staff in providing the highest quality of patient care during surgical process. -Responsible for the supervision, orientation and continuing education of all the Operating Room staff and is accountable for all patient care given during the relevant phases of the surgical process. -Assist with the development and implementation of the CAH surgical systems goals, policies and procedures. -Assist in the training of new staffs. -Oversee Central Sterile Services (CSSD) and Ambulatory Daycare. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure the smooth running of the OR, CSSD and Ambulatory Daycare.
- Establish, control and monitor a safe perioperative environment (e.g., technical and aseptic practice, electrical safety, physical facilities, occupational safety).
- Comply and provide direction with hospital and departmental policies, procedures and assignments concerning safety, infection control and equipment.
- Interpret and implement the scope and standards of perioperative nursing practice.
- Supervise and direct the coordination of perioperative care among the surgical team.
- Assume responsibility for the monitoring and evaluation processes within the OR department.
- Conduct meetings/briefings to staff to ensure smooth running of the assigned unit.
- Ensure adequate staffing for the units.
- Plan work assignments and schedules.
- Arrange and recommend vacation schedules for the staff.
- Counsel staff on personal and work problems.
- Guide the staff in solving complaints concerning patients' relatives, medical and other staff.
- Adopt a system of documentation of patient care and forms.
- Develop and review standard operating procedures to guide perioperative services such as:
- Correct site/side and identity
- Safe medication administration
- Sponge, sharp and instrument counts and Positioning
- Surgical attire and surgical hand-washing
- Assist in the assessment of staffing needs and selection of appropriate staff by consultation and interview.
- Develop and implement programs for the orientation of new staff.
- Instruct, observe and document job performance of new staff in a timely manner.
- Assess and provide continuing education needs and requirements of staff relevant to technological developments, changing licensure requirements, standards of practice and revisions in policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Educator and Chief of Nursing Services to ensure the continued skill development of staff relating to service-specific needs are addressed. Maintain knowledge of current trends in standards of care and health care management.
- Collaborate with the relevant medical staff to meet identified educational and developmental needs of staff in OR/CSSD/Ambulatory Daycare.
- Maintain education records to include license and certification documentation.
- Ensure that credentialing relating to procedures, equipment, and supplies are provided to appropriate staff.
- Ensure adequate communication inter/intra-departmental and with administrative and medical staff.
- Conduct meetings/briefings to staff to ensure smooth running of the assigned units.
- Participate in various performance improvement activities to improve patient care.
- Guide and assist Endoscopy staff in care, cleaning, decontamination, maintenance, handling, storage and sterilization and/or disinfection of endoscopes and related accessories.
- Ensure items to be sterilized are decontaminated, packaged, sterilized and transported in a controlled environment at the CSSD.
- Maintain and update inventory and ensure there is a planned preventive maintenance of biomedical devices and equipment.
- Monitor the equipment efficiency and utilization. Monitor and adjust work and equipment assignments to facilitate optimum resource utilization.
- Oversee surgical equipment during repairs and arrange for usage of substitution equipment as needed.
- Research and assess the need for new equipment and materials and make appropriate recommendations to management and coordinate with vendors trial and evaluation of proposed purchases.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of surgeons' preference for materials and supplies and recommend appropriate acquisitions.
- Take appropriate action on incidents and develop plan of action.
- Assist the Chief of Nursing Services in the investigation of incident reporting, suspected infections and patient/doctor complaints and resolve problems or make recommendations for action.
- Identify, communicate, and when appropriate, resolve problems, and develop courses of action in a timely manner.
- Collect and trend data and provide analysis reports.
- Carry out environmental audit for OR, CSSD and Ambulatory Daycare.
- Be a member of the Disaster Plan Team. Participate actively and fully committed in activities of the QA, Infection Control, Fire and Safety program.
