Position Summary The Chief Engineer (CENG), deployed aboard a Cape Class vessel, is a key member of the on-board crew, overseeing the entire Marine engineering department on the vessel and responsible for the maintenance and operation of all engineering equipment on-board. In a ship emergency, the CENG will assume complete control of all internal ship engineering response actions. The CENG works closely with the Commanding Officer (CO) and will ensure that the physical aspects of the vessel are completely under control. Our Ideal Candidate MDSB seeks applications from professionals who can respond positively to a challenging and high-pressure environment. The programme of the Branch is high profile, with added sensitivity due to the armed nature of the workforce, demanding a high level of training and qualifications as well as liaison with other agencies and ABF Commands. The work you will undertake entails spending substantial time away from home for extended periods usually up to 28 days but possibly up to 36 days, on a Fly In Fly Out roster with a possibility of extension. Knowledge of and Ability to Apply Relevant Legislation: Including but not limited to: Maritime Powers Act 2013 Privacy Act 1988 Customs Act 1901 Australian Border Force Act 2015 Quarantine Act 1908 Navigation Act 2012 Migration Act 1958 Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and Comcare AMSA Marine Orders and Marine Notices Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Mandatory Qualifications - Must Hold: Engineer Class 3 near Coastal Certificate of Competency as per Marine Order 505 plus 18 months Sea Service as DENG on a Cape Class or equivalent, or: An Engineer Watchkeeper with endorsement from AMSA to act as Chief Engineer, or Engineer Class 2 Certificate of Competency, or Engineer Class 1 Certificate of Competency. Highly Desirable Qualifications: Restricted Electrical License, Rigger or Dogman License, Confined Space Certificate, Working at Heights Certificate, Caterpillar 3516 maintenance and repair experience. Mandatory Role Requirements: Must be able to obtain and maintain the following:Certificate of Safety Training (COST) STCW, which includes the following components: Elementary First Aid Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities Personal Survival Techniques Security Awareness Training Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats Advanced Fire Fighting Other Information: These positions are seagoing positions and as such living space is limited with shared cabins and communal ablutions for crew. There may be limited internet access and phone connectivity for extended periods of time. The ABF Cutters operate in remote areas and there is limited opportunity to be transferred ashore during deployment. How to Apply: You are not required to provide a written application for this role.
