National Operations | Maritime Border Command & OSB | Marine Deployments & Support About the Australian Border Force The Australian Border Force (ABF) is an operationally independent body under the Home Affairs Portfolio. The ABF operates in a rapidly evolving global environment, performing to the highest standards while remaining agile to anticipate and respond to emerging threats. Branch Overview Marine Deployments and Support Branch (MDSB) deploys sea-going marine Border Force Officers to Australian Border Force Cutters (ABFC) and other associated assets. Officers undertake a range of border enforcement activities throughout the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (AEEZ), including offshore maritime patrols and response, surveillance, and deterrence activities. Position Summary The Chief Engineer (CENG), deployed aboard a Cape Class vessel, oversees the entire Marine engineering department on the vessel and is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all engineering equipment on-board. Knowledge Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant legislation, including: Maritime Powers Act 2013 Privacy Act 1988 Customs Act 1901 Australian Border Force Act 2015 Quarantine Act 1908 Navigation Act 2012 Migration Act 1958 Work Health and Safety Act 2011 AMSA Marine Orders and Marine Notices Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Specific Duties and Responsibilities Perform as a member of the Command Team Manage the correct, safe, efficient operation and maintenance of the vessel's machinery and systems Provide daily advice to the Commanding Officer (CO) about the current and projected availability and capabilities of the ship Ensure Engineering "On Call" arrangements are undertaken appropriately Supervise the Deputy Engineer Officer (DENG) and manage their performance Manage and conduct on-board maintenance and administration of engineering technical matters Provide technical advice to the CO during emergencies and drills Actively participate in Marine Operational Compliance (MOC) assessments Build and maintain productive working relationships with shore side support staff Mandatory Qualifications - Must hold: Engineer Class 3 near Coastal Certificate of Competency OR Endorsed Engineer Watchkeeper certificate OR Engineer Class 2 Certificate of Competency OR Engineer Class 1 Certificate of Competency Mandatory Role Requirements Must be able to obtain and maintain the Certificate of Safety Training (COST) STCW AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness for sea duty Ability to undertake and successfully complete the ABF Operational Readiness Assessment (ORA) Ability to obtain and maintain a Restricted Electrical license Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 Other Information These positions are seagoing positions with limited living space. The ABF Cutters operate in remote areas with limited opportunity to be transferred ashore during deployment.
