The Issam Abdallah Visual Journalist Fellowship: A Year of Immersive Storytelling Issam Abdallah, a courageous Reuters visual journalist, was killed on October 13, 2023, while covering cross-border shelling on the Israeli-Lebanon border. Issam dedicated his life to capturing the human impact of conflict, injustice, and hope through powerful visual storytelling. He believed in the transformative power of images to connect us, foster empathy, and inspire change. Honor Issam's Legacy. Become a Reuters Visual Journalist. Reuters is launching the Issam Abdallah Visual Journalist Fellowship to honor his memory and empower the next generation of visual storytellers. This year-long, paid fellowship, based in our Dubai bureau, offers a unique opportunity for a talented visual journalist (with up to five years of experience) to immerse themselves in impactful news reporting across the region. The start date for the fellowship will be Monday 5th May 2025. Immerse Yourself in Meaningful Storytelling This fellowship provides hands-on training, an intensive learning program, and mentorship from senior Reuters leaders. You'll focus on human-centred reporting, embracing Issam's commitment to empathy and compelling visual narratives. About the Role As a Reuters Fellow, you will:
- Report global news: Contribute to Reuters' coverage of the world's most important stories from our Dubai bureau.
- Develop compelling narratives: Pitch and produce impactful stories for broadcast and digital platforms, from breaking news to in-depth features.
- Master visual storytelling: Hone your skills in filming, editing, and crafting compelling narratives under tight deadlines.
- Collaborate and innovate: Work effectively both independently and as part of a dynamic team, embracing new technologies and diverse perspectives.
- Source and verify: Proactively identify and verify user-generated content (UGC) and third-party information, especially during breaking news events.
- Uphold journalistic ethics: Adhere to Reuters' Trust Principles of independence, integrity, and freedom from bias.
- Proven news judgment and a keen eye for impactful visual storytelling.
- Strong video shooting and editing skills (producing basic news edits under pressure).
- Ability to write accurate and engaging news copy in English.
- Proficiency in sourcing and verifying information, including UGC.
- Adaptability, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to continuous learning.
- Technical proficiency with video cameras and production software.
- Familiarity with diverse media platforms, from traditional television to social media (TikTok, etc.).
