Job Description – School Nurse

Core purposes:

  • To support children’s health and wellbeing in order for children to fully participate in active school life.
  • To provide medical attention to staff and pupils.
  • To ensure that medical information is shared in a timely manner on a need to know basis.
  • To implement systems and policies to ensure the wellbeing of all members of the school community and in line with DHA and KHDA regulations.

Key duties include:

  • To ensure children are safe and well cared for at all times.
  • Treating children and staff.
  • Arranging to get the child/person home safely or to alternative care, e.g. to hospital – having first checked with the Principal, Doctor or Head of Primary.
  • Administering medication according to school and DHA policy – only when the medicines are clearly labelled with prescription details and the family has given written consent using the school pro forma.
  • Performing health checks.
  • Ensuring safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
  • Maintenance of first aid kits around the school and replacement of supplies.
  • Ensuring that medication such as Epipens are at hand for community members at risk and that signs indicate the location of these.
  • To ensure that the school lifesaving equipment is always accessible and functional.
  • Maintenance of child files, medical records and treatment records.
  • Liaising with local health authorities in the organisation of immunisation programmes.
  • To comply with our agreed policies and Aquila ways.
  • To actively participate in the performance management process of self and others.
  • To maintain positive working relationships with all members of the school community.
  • Able to work independently without medical back up on site.
  • Willing to make a full contribution to the life of the School.

Additional duties:

  • Arranging and managing communication with families with regard to consent.
  • Maintaining records on electronic and paper registers.
  • Development of health care plans where appropriate; giving support to relevant teaching staff in their dealings with children in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities.
  • Regular meetings with relevant staff to provide advice on effective pastoral and health care for particular children.
  • Drafting, sharing and updating of “essential care list” of children with “need to know” conditions.
  • Providing general advice and training for staff for initial care of children with particular medical needs.

Administration duties:

  • Ensuring medical questionnaires and all relevant parental consent forms to administer or carry medicine etc. on entry to school and at agreed stages of school career are obtained and retained.
  • Assisting with the implementation and regular updating of child health care plans.
  • Maintaining records of all visits to school clinic or accidents treated and reported, including the nature of problem, treatment or advice. Updating as necessary to ensure accurate and rapid retrieval of information.
  • When requested, provision of first aid updates for members of staff, particularly PE staff or those involved in trips.
  • Contributing to learning within the curriculum.
  • Raising awareness of medical and health issues to the school community.

Health and Safety

  • Emphasising the importance of safety in all areas of the curriculum, communicating to the pupils the importance of a responsible attitude towards personal safety, the safety of others and respect for The Aquila School’s property and equipment.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect the school community, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing school life.
  • Ensure that all the necessary health and safety rules and procedures are being followed.
In the context of his/her employment the member of staff will frequently be in the presence of children and will therefore have to have appropriate levels of training in child protection. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety and welfare of our children, these concerns must be reported immediately to the school safeguarding lead. In addition, all staff are required to carry out any tasks required by the school or the regional office to facilitate the smooth day to day running of the school. To be line managed by the school doctor and school principal. Hours of work- 7:15/7.30am to 4.00/4:15 pm Monday to Thursday and 7:15am to 12noon on Fridays. Holidays- 30 days to be taken only during school breaks as per the school KHDA approved calendar – the school will require a nurse in school when the school is closed but Hemam children are attending. You consistently demonstrate and role-model the ISP Leadership Competencies in all that you do.
