Student, Hydrogeology - Hybrid Location: Calgary, Alberta Employment Type: Student, 4 month term Salary Range: $23.52 - $32.25 per hour The Opportunity The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Summer Student to join our high-performing Regulatory Applications branch. The Mining team is composed of diverse professionals working collaboratively to support the organization’s mandate. Mining activities are large-scale and inherently complex, requiring a multidisciplinary team of engineers and science professionals to review, evaluate, and analyze various submissions. This includes applications, authorizations, plans, and reports, all of which are critical to ensuring the responsible development of Alberta’s resources. As a Student Hydrogeologist, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in regulatory oversight, data gathering, data entry, and evaluation within the field of hydrogeology. Working closely with experienced hydrogeologists and environmental scientists, you will contribute to a variety of projects that directly impact the AER's regulatory processes and environmental stewardship. This role offers the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in a collaborative, real-world setting, while making meaningful contributions to Alberta’s resource management efforts. Your time will be divided between office tasks and fieldwork, which may involve travel to remote areas of the province. What your day-to-day will look like:
- Regulatory Oversight - Assist in monitoring and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and standards. Support the review of regulatory reports and submissions.
- Participate in site inspections and audits to assess compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Data Entry and Management - Enter collected data into databases and maintain accurate and organized records. Perform quality control checks on data to ensure accuracy and completeness. Assist in the development and maintenance of data management systems.
- Data Evaluation - Analyze hydrogeological data to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies.
- Currently enrolled in your Bachelor’s program in Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field.
- Proficiency in data entry and management software (e.g., Excel, Access) is preferred.
- Strong interest in hydrogeology and environmental regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.

- Ability to carry heavy loads or equipment over difficult terrain for long distances in all types of weather conditions is required.
- Some overnight travel is required.
