Playing an important part in the Design Team, the Intermediate Mechanical Designer/Engineer is a team player with the ability to receive and execute instructions from the Senior team members or Project Manager with general supervision. The Intermediate Mechanical Designer/Engineer will prepare drawings of existing building systems and prepare drawings for renovations and new construction of moderate complexity based on verbal instructions, sketches and/or formal documents. The position also requires performing heating & cooling load calculations, preparing plans and other drawings for construction, performing inspections of existing facilities to determine and verify existing systems and details, and utilizing design equipment and technology. EDUCATION / LICENSING / CERTIFICATION
- Mechanical Designer - Diploma – Technologist, Mechanical / Building Science / Building Systems
- Mechanical Engineer – Bachelor’s Degree – Mechanical Engineering
- Project Portfolio to demonstrate Revit experience and capabilities
- Driver’s License
- 5-8 years of experience in the engineering consulting industry, specifically building system design & construction
- Moderate experience in complex systems design such as laboratories, healthcare, institutional, and civic projects is required.
- Good understanding of HVAC, Heat Pump systems, Hydronic systems, plumbing systems, and fire protection systems design is required
- Possession of a solid understanding of construction protocols and processes and a proven ability to interpret contract documents (drawings and specifications)
- Experience working on LEED and NetZero projects would be considered an asset.
- Experience with energy modelling software such as IES, eQuest, and RETscreen would be considered an asset.
- Good understanding and experience with BIM REVIT MEP is required to perform in this role.
- Ability to use HAP software load calculation and/or E-Quest for modeling
- Ability to perform complete and detailed site take-off
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal

- Generate mark-ups for junior staff for HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems
- Ability to use HAP software load calculation and/or E-Quest for heating/cooling load calculation or modelling
- Perform some system selection, with direction from Senior Engineer/Designer such as – diffusers, variable air volume boxes, terminal heating equipment, air valves, heat pumps, fans, etc.
- Complete design and calculations of HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and controls for small/mid/large scale projects with minimal supervision from Senior team members.
- Fluency with BIM REVIT MEP and use of Navisworks for coordination, AutoCAD, and MS Office
- Fluency with Bluebeam to review drawings and develop design markups for coordination.
- Support Construction Administration team in the review and issuance of documents such as RFI response, CCO’s, CO’s, shop drawing review, and perform on site field reviews.
- Co-ordinate project information and work with all disciplines, including but not limited to, architectural, electrical, structural, geotechnical, and civil as required
- Strong communication skills with both internal teammates and external clients/project stakeholders
- Understanding of contracts related to our industry
- Good working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, ASHRAE, NFPA, CSA and industry standards
- Fluency in the design and construction process, building science, and building systems
- Capable of conducting site assessments and building system audits
- Preparation of project reports and presentations at design milestones
- Coordination with suppliers, contractors, and other design disciplines
- Ability to work with clients and consultant groups to manage a project, with supervision from Senior team members.
- General understanding of the sustainability implications of mechanical building system technologies
- Preparation of tender documents and assistance in the development of specifications with supervision from Senior team members.
- Deliver design excellence: meet/exceed project success criteria
- Integrate the three pillars of sustainability into the design process: social, financial, environmental
- Develop and sustain relationships with client and consultant groups
- Work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Provide quality documents with minimal mark-ups
- Execute engineering calculations, small equipment selection, and design layouts with minimal supervision from Senior team members
- Provide completely coordinated documents
