Position Title Senior Automation Designer – Mechanical Reports to Team Leader, Mechanical Design or Manager, Mechanical Design Key Skills

  • Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks with thorough drafting knowledge.
  • Ability to design tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
  • Strong understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and electrical devices (e.g., switches, load cells, LVDTs).
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design requirements.
  • Capable of independently completing responsibilities with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities Core Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering calculations related to strength, speed, pressure, force, and other design aspects.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications for developing equipment, processes, and products.
  • Produce working and detailed drawings using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Review and ensure compliance with applicable standards (e.g., OSHA, CE, or customer-specific).
  • Provide design support for CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 pressure boundary components.
  • Collaborate with customers, vendors, and internal teams to achieve project goals.
  • Organize project documentation, including quotes, drawings, and schedules.
  • Assist fabricators, machinists, toolmakers, and electricians during debug and system integration.
  • Select appropriate mechanical components and create requisitions with delivery schedules.
Leadership and Mentorship
  • Supervise Co-op students, Junior, and Intermediate Designers on various projects.
  • Mentor team members to improve their technical knowledge and capabilities.
  • Lead or participate in design reviews with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Assist in developing department standards and implementing corporate objectives.
Continuous Improvement
  • Advance self-knowledge and demonstrate the use of tools such as PDCA, Formal Problem Solving (A3, RCCA), Kaizen, 5S, and Visual Management.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts within the department.
Qualifications Education
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of Mechanical Design experience.
  • Strong understanding of robotics, vision systems, machine controls, structured problem solving, DOE, statistical analysis, precision engineering principles, or GAMP.
