Technical Support for the ICBA Genebank Data Management

The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) is an international, non-profit agricultural research center established in 1999. ICBA focuses on marginal areas affected by salinity, water scarcity, and drought, helping to improve food security and livelihoods for rural communities worldwide. Job Summary This technical support is required to manage the gene bank data, facilitating efficient cataloging and accessibility of plant genetic resources. This project aims to:

Ensuring Data Integrity and Accuracy: Minimize errors in records, ensuring that information about genetic resources is accurate and reliable.
Facilitating Easy Access and Retrieval: Allow users to quickly search and retrieve genetic resource information.
Supporting Research and Development: Provide a foundation for scientific research and breeding programs.
Enhancing Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: Support collaboration among scientists and institutions by providing shared access to data.
Ensuring Compliance with International Protocols: Ensure adherence to international agreements like the Nagoya Protocol.
Securing Long-Term Preservation: Ensure accurate documentation of storage conditions and seed viability.
Mitigating Risks of Data Loss: Prevent data loss through regular backups and security measures.
Driving Decision-Making and Strategic Planning: Provide insights that help prioritize resources for conservation and research.
Supporting Climate Change Adaptation: Enable identification of traits critical for developing climate-resilient crops.

Job Responsibilities

Data Entry: Entering and updating gene bank accession information into the database.
Data Verification: Ensuring accuracy by cross-referencing data with physical records.
Database Maintenance: Organizing and maintaining the gene bank's inventory database.
Recordkeeping: Managing physical records related to accessions and seed samples.
Inventory Monitoring: Monitoring the availability and status of accessions.
Quality Control: Supporting measures to ensure the integrity of genetic resources.
Data Analysis: Assisting in analyzing inventory data trends for management purposes.
Collaboration: Working closely with gene bank staff for effective communication.
Documentation: Contributing to reports and summaries related to data management.
Research Support: Assisting in research projects involving gene bank data.

Qualifications and Experience

Experience working with gene banks or agricultural organizations.
Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Data Science, Information Technology, Biology, or related field.
Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Genetics, Plant Science, or Agricultural Sciences.
Experience with gene bank data management systems (e.g., GRIN-Global, Genesys).
Expertise in managing large datasets and proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
