What is Specialist Fiber Optics Engineer? Specialist Fiber Optics Engineer oversees the operation of the Optical Fiber Cable network, encompassing both (ISP) and Outside Plant (OSP) activities on a 24/7 basis. This involves executing both Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Corrective Maintenance (CM) tasks according to the specified Job Descriptions (JDs). Coordination with field teams, Operations (Ops) team, Network Operations Center (NOC) L1 and L2 teams, and Planning team is essential to address network issues as required. The role reports directly to the FOO Manager and entails collaboration with a team of seven members. The job station is based in Peshawar; however, relocation to anywhere in the North may be required based on the company's needs. What does Specialist Fiber Optics Engineer do?
- Maintain fiber network availability of the designated links and ensure full compliance with the Service Level Agreement.
- Operations and maintenance (Fiber Optic Core, Metro and Access Network) of Huawei / Ericsson SDH/MSTP/DWDM/OTN/SPO/IPRAN Equipment and Fiber Optic Cable.
- Rectify remote and on-site network equipment failure and performance degraded links.
- Ensure compliance with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) pertaining to troubleshooting, escalation, and fault management in Service Operation.
- Uphold comprehensive network documentation to facilitate fault localization and ensure timely resolution.
- Oversee and assist area teams in addressing onsite network faults and resolving team queries.
- Liaise with subcontractors and vendors and evaluate their performance in designated area.
- Assist the regional manager to plan periodic preventive maintenance of the equipment and the fiber plant.
- Oversee inventories and proper calibration of tools and test equipment assigned to the team.
- Assist the regional manager in acceptance testing and handover/takeover activity.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders for legal and security issues and escalate to the head office if issues are not resolved in the agreed time frames.
- Assist in the installation, commissioning, and integration of SDH/DWDM/MSTP/OTN/IPRAN Equipment & other network peripherals.
- Conduct Civil Works Inspection for Fiber Cable Protection, planned activities, invoice verification, and vendor performance review meetings.
- Ensure update of Network Diagrams, as-built drawings, and fiber pair utilization schema.
- Provide 24/7 support and streamline operational SOPs/WLAs.
- Keep abreast of the O&M procedures covering Transmission platforms and suggest ways for their improvement to line management. Also, guide and assist other team members in performing their tasks to enhance overall team performance.
- Maintain the equipment spares inventory related to transmission equipment. Also, ensure that a stock of critical spares/consumables is maintained at strategic locations.
- Generate periodic network operations reports and conduct fault trend analysis.
- Manage on-site correction of performance-degraded links highlighted by the Regional Manager/team leader.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Telecommunication, Electronics, Communication Systems).
- Minimum 3 - 5 years of experience in Optical Fiber Transmission, SDH/DWDM/MSTP/IPRAN, and OTN Equipment O&M.
- Proficient in GSM, PDH, SDH, DWDM, MSTP, IPRAN, and OTN technologies, as well as Fiber Optic Networks and ITU-T Standards.
- Expertise in vendor management, negotiation skills, and conflict management.
- In-depth expertise in the maintenance of Optical Fiber cable and systems.
- Proficient in the use of OTDR, OSA, Power, and Source meter instruments.
- Knowledge in using NMS products of Huawei and Ericsson (U2000, SOEM, and IPTNMS).
- Proficient in using AutoCAD and Map source/Google Earth for mapping and design purposes.
- Possesses excellent interpersonal, oral/written communication, and presentation skills.
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
