Unit Manager - Theatre

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Be operational as well as manage the administrative duties.
2. Manage the Theatre Department.
3. Liaise and communicate with Surgeons.
4. Management of staff.
5. Ensure adherence to policies and procedures at all times.
6. Manage staff according to the Basic Conditions of Employment and the Disciplinary Code, staff planning and Recruitment and Selection of staff.
7. Manage the day-to-day problem solving.
8. Stock and equipment management including ordering of stock and equipment.
9. Accurate billing of stock utilised.
10. Training and development of Theatre staff.
11. After hours cover as per a roster.
12. Maintain infection control strategies and procedures of the hospital.
13. Maintain health and safety principles.
14. Maintain and apply the required discipline.
15. Evaluation, intervention and resolution of patient complaints and queries.
16. Prepare daily, weekly and monthly reports.
17. Manage ad hoc projects as and when required.

Desired Experience & Qualification

1. Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse.
2. Post Basic Diploma in Operating Theatre Technique.
3. 5 years Operational Experience in a Theatre Unit.
4. Scrub experience in Cardiothoracic Neurosurgery and or Ophthalmology will be advantageous.
5. Previous experience in a management position will be advantageous.
6. Knowledge of the legislative and Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
7. Valid Driver’s licence and ability to travel.
8. Afterhours availability – own transport.
9. Excellent Leadership qualities and mentoring skills.
10. Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills.
11. The skill to manage nursing standards and in-service training.
12. Maintain a professional image and character.
13. Build sound working relationships with multidisciplinary team.
14. Accurate record keeping and the management of stock.
15. Commitment to initiate and implement continuous improvement projects.
16. Knowledge of the Kronos System.
