Resident Medical Officer - UPMC Kildare Location: UPMC Kildare Hospital Job type: Permanent Overview of role: UPMC Kildare Hospital is recruiting a Resident Medical Officer on a full-time, permanent basis. The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is a key member of the hospital clinical management team whose primary role is to provide and oversee the medical care of patients under relevant consultant instructions and guidance for the in-patient and out-patients areas of the UPMC Kildare Hospital. The RMO is the link between the Consultant and the patient to ensure continuity of high-quality Consultant delivered patient care, whilst maximizing efficiency in accordance with UPMC policies and procedures. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical Duties

  • Provide medical services within the scope of the Departmental Policies for the provision of care in the inpatient, the Pre-Assessment service and outpatient settings at UPMC Kildare.
  • Act and behave professionally and perform duties in a manner that optimizes patient-centered care.
  • Provide thorough clinical evaluation, careful explanation to patients and family, and collaborative decision making when necessary, for the proper delivery of surgical and medical services to the patients in our facility.
  • Complete documentation of patients’ assessment, history and physical on admission, and write appropriate follow-up comments in case notes in line with the assessment of Patient Policy.
  • Conduct daily re-assessment on in-patients as advised by the consultant and/or nursing staff.
  • Diagnose and treat patients under the direction of the relevant consultant.
  • Initiate and monitor treatment as clinically appropriate and safe.
  • Carry out clinical procedures as requested by Consultants.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests as clinically required while under the direction of the relevant consultant.
  • Liaise with other clinical disciplines within the hospital (Anaesthetists, Nursing, diagnostic Services, Laboratory, Pharmacy) in relation to patient care.
  • Respond to all Code Blues and lead the nursing staff in emergency/cardiac arrest procedures.
  • Respond to any adverse occurrences e.g., injuries, falls.
  • Carry a Dect Phone at all times while on duty and respond to each call in an efficient manner.
  • Discuss care with patients and relatives and participate in family meetings when required.
  • Ensure discharge summaries are completed as per Discharge Policy as requested by Consultants and/or nursing staff.
  • Provide cover on a rostered basis to always ensure on-site RMO presence when there are patients being treated. Participate in an on-call roster.
Health and Safety:
  • Uphold UPMC Kildare Hospital’s policy requirements in relation to Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety, and Health and Safety at work regulations and attend updates.
  • Identify potential risks for all staff, patients, and visitors and adhere to relevant incident reporting procedures.
  • Observe a general duty of care for the health, safety, and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors, and patients within the hospital.
IPC
  • Ensure that work methods are compliant with UPMC’s agreed policies and procedures and do not endanger other people or yourself.
  • Be aware of infection prevention and control policies, practices, and guidelines appropriate for duties and always follow these to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of infection prevention and control, policies, practices, and procedures through attendance at annual mandatory updates and ongoing continuing professional development.
  • Challenge poor infection prevention and control practices of others and report any breaches, using appropriate UPMC mechanisms.
Professional / Education
  • Contribute to service development through appropriate continuous education, research initiatives, and keeping up to date with nursing literature.
  • Provide support/advice to those engaging in continuous professional development in his/her area of responsibility.
  • Participate in the identification, development, and delivery of induction, education, training, and development programmes for nursing and non-nursing staff.
  • Participate in in-service training, orientation programmes, and appraisals of all nursing staff.
  • Provide support supervision and professional development of appropriate staff.
  • Engage in performance review processes including personal development planning by setting own and staff objectives and providing and receiving feedback.
Medication Management
  • Adhere to all Medication management policies and guidelines to ensure safe prescribing.
  • Verify and document patient’s current medication on admission.
  • Verify all prescribed medication, including appropriateness of clinical needs at time of prescription.
  • Complete a discharge prescription.
  • Give medication advice to patients on discharge.
Education and Research
  • Participate in Departmental Educational Meetings.
  • Mandatory Clinical and non-Clinical Training (BLC, GCP, Fire safety etc.)
  • UPMC/D3 e-Rounds
  • Other education activity to meet the requirements of the statutory rules regarding Professional Competence Assurance.
  • Participate, within the departmental framework and guidelines, in research which may be multi-institutional or internal.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Applicants must be fully registered with the Irish Medical Council holding a valid registration.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Must possess competent clinical and interactive skills with adult and paediatric patients.
  • Effective team player both as a facilitator and in the course of work.
  • Competent to work autonomously when required under consultant supervision/advice.
  • Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to motivate, influence, inspire, and encourage different ways of working.
  • Ability to prioritize and deliver to short deadlines.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Completion of Mandatory Training as required by UPMC Management.
  • Manual Handling and Patient Movement Training.
