The main responsibilities for the Laboratory Technician are to support the Molecular Biology Department in assisting in the organisation of the workload and prioritising tasks to ensure patient results are delivered in a timely manner. In addition the Laboratory Technician is required to support the Chief Molecular Scientist to work towards achieving the short and longterm departmental goals & quality objectives. Specific Tasks
- Be aware of and be compliant with of all the documentation related to your Department Training record SOPs Forms.
- Follow established Quality Management procedures.
- Receive test samples according to SOPs.
- Assist in the processing of samples incorporating automated and manual methods of analysis to include preanalytical analytical and postanalytical processes.
- Perform routine laboratory tests to a high quality and as required in accordance with departmental SOPs.
- Perform DNA/RNA extraction & RTPCR in accordance with SOPs.
- Perform sample analysis and sample preparation in a timely manner
- Assist in the completion of the departments daily tasks including work files to a high standard to ensure patient results delivered in a timely manner.
- Participate in the management of reagent and consumable stock levels.
- Assist with control of logbooks.
- Comply with preand postanalytical storage of samples.
- Ensure all waste is adequately treated and disposed of as per SOPs and that all waste is removed as required to waste facilities.
- Advise of any equipment failures or problems encountered while conducting his/her duties.
- Carry out maintenance of instrumentation.
- Clean/disinfect working areas daily.
- Demonstrate Good Laboratory Practice.
- A degree in Biological Science/Minimum Qualification Level 7 (incl Diploma & Ordinary Bachelor Degree)
- Previous relevant laboratory experience with knowledge of basic laboratory techniques in a molecular biology medical diagnostic laboratory preferable but not essential
- Candidates must have the personal competence and capacity to properly discharge the duties of the role
