The Legal Counsellor is required to perform work involving the conduct of research related to the laws and legal issues pertinent to the operations of CARE. Duties include preparing legal documents, developing and maintaining a repository of documents on legal matters. Dependent on assignment. Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conducts research on legal issues relating to CARE operations and prepares written opinions, working papers, and reports thereon.
  2. Undertakes extensive review of legal documents, instruments, and other material; identifies issues and proposes amendments.
  3. Prepares briefs and preliminary drafts of legislative legal material.
  4. Develops and maintains an up-to-date source of laws, judgments, contract precedents, and other related material pertinent to CARE operations.
  5. Contributes to the review and formulation of recommendations to amend legislation pertinent to CARE.
  6. Assists in the drafting of legal documents such as contracts, agreements, opinions, and briefs; prepares memoranda, letters, and other documents.
  7. Represents the Legal Department on committees and at meetings, conferences, and workshops when requested.
  8. Conducts legal investigations within CARE.
  9. Liaises with other divisions and external agencies regarding the work of the Division.
  10. Copies and collates relevant documents.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
  12. Provides legal guidance and advice to CARE operations, including general legal advice on best practices for compliance, input on business decisions and contract negotiations, and legal strategies for litigation and other legal activities.
  13. Examines the evidence at hand and makes decisions related to legal strategies and options.
  14. Effectively communicates both verbally (with CARE entities, judges) and in written documents (such as legal summaries, statements, official letters, opinions, and briefs).
  15. Successfully represents CARE's stance and legal standing, with excellent persuasion skills.
  16. Represents CARE at hearings and trials. Prior to the proceeding, gathers relevant information, sometimes requesting documents from other involved parties to build CARE's legal case. During trials, presents arguments to a judge or, while at a hearing, negotiates on CARE's behalf.
Reporting to Director of Legal Department Qualifications:
  1. A minimum of a B.A. degree in Law / Legal Studies.
  2. Worked for at least one (1) year in the legal field.
  3. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, fluent in both verbal and written English.
  4. Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word as well as computerized accounting applications.
  5. Familiar with a multinational work environment.
