Teaching - Secondary (Education & Training) Job Purpose: EAL Teaching And Support Reporting To: Secondary EAL Coordinator Other Key Relationships: Student Support & Pathways Coordinator, Heads Of Year Teaching & Learning
- Plan and prepare lessons following the EAL curriculum, including additional tasks and projects tailored to the interests and needs of different groups.
- Teach EAL classes that are adapted to students’ proficiency levels, focusing on developing fluency in the four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
- Differentiate for varying skills and learning needs, supporting students on the Learning Support register while ensuring appropriate challenge for all students.
- Encourage language production and confidence, balancing challenge and reward.
- Conduct ongoing formative assessments, provide feedback on written work, and carry out termly proficiency testing.
- Support students in effectively using provided equipment and materials, including learning technologies.
- Support EAL students in subject lessons through close collaboration with subject teachers.
- Establish productive relationships with EAL students, acting as a supportive point of contact for them at school.
- Organise and manage an appropriate learning environment and resources.
- Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge.
- Have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practice of the school.
- Demonstrate positive attitudes, values and behaviours to develop and sustain effective working relationships within the school community.
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security and refer all concerns to the Head of school, taking part in internal training where necessary.
- Uphold school values regarding equality, diversity, and inclusion, respecting and celebrating individual differences.
- Treat all information relating to a pupil as strictly confidential, and be aware of and comply with school policy and practice, taking part in internal training where necessary.
- Commit to improving own practice through reflection and self-evaluation, attending staff training/ meetings as requested, identifying relevant professional development needs and proactively communicating this with leaders.
- Lead and maintain active supervision of pupils during assigned break or lunch duties.
- Promote positive behaviour and resolution, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
- Join bonding trips to supervise students.
- Contribute to the whole school ethos, environment and organisation, both practically and as a positive role model for pupils and colleagues.
- Play an active role in the care, wellbeing and safeguarding of all students.
- Proactively act on concerns, reporting immediately using the relevant school procedures.
- Demonstrate care, empathy and respect to all students.
- Actively support and encourage students to create, develop and maintain healthy friendships.
- Support all school systems of recording and reporting concerns regarding student welfare, including child protection and safeguarding.
- Act as a role model to all students.
- Actively participate in the school’s House System.
- Model good practice to students, promoting the values as set out in the NAE code of conduct.
- Consistently apply NAE & school policies, particularly the positive behaviour policy.
- Play an active and encouraging role in the transition and admission of new students to the school.
- Proactively communicate with parents.
- Encourage students to have high standards in dress, attitude and behaviour.
- Any other tasks or practices as reasonably directed by the HoD or SLT.
- Play an active role in the care, wellbeing and safeguarding of all students.
- Undertake child protection and safeguarding training relevant to the role.
- Ensure that all incidents (or concerns) and actions (including communications) are logged onto CPOMs.
- Develop and implement systems which encourage pupils to:

- A proven ability to differentiate teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with additional learning needs or varying levels of English proficiency.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build supportive relationships with students and collaborate effectively with colleagues in both teaching and support roles.
- A commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages confidence, language development, and cultural sensitivity.
- Demonstrated capability in designing and delivering engaging, curriculum-aligned lessons that integrate innovative teaching methods and appropriate use of technology.
