Head of Data Engineering | £120,000 basic + 10% + package + flexible working | Remote-first About the Client My client is a leading financial institution that has recently achieved Tier 1 status, reflecting their commitment to growth and innovation. This is an exciting time to join their organisation as they embark on a significant digital transformation journey. About the Role I am recruiting for an experienced and driven Head of Data Engineering to lead a large, dynamic team. You will play a critical role in overseeing the operational stability of their legacy data warehouses while driving their strategic migration to Azure. This is a high-impact position where you will shape the future of their data infrastructure and ensure they meet the evolving demands of their business and regulatory landscape. Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a team of 6-8 direct reports, overseeing a large data engineering department (70-100 people) composed primarily of a scalable offshore third-party resource.
- Ensure the smooth and efficient operation of existing data warehouses, maintaining high availability and performance.
- Spearhead the migration of data and applications to Azure, leveraging cloud-native technologies to modernize their data infrastructure.
- Collaborate closely with Data Governance and Management teams to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., BCBS 239, GDPR).
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement within the data engineering function, fostering a culture of excellence.
- Manage budgets and vendor relationships, optimizing costs and ensuring value delivery.
- Proven experience leading large data engineering teams in the financial services industry.
- Deep understanding of data warehousing principles, ETL processes, and data modeling techniques.
- Experience with Azure cloud technologies (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure SQL Database).
- Strong knowledge of data governance and data management best practices, with an understanding of relevant regulations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
