The primary purpose of the position is to provide direct service in the form of counseling individuals, couples, families, and groups on matters pertaining to family dynamics, parent-child interaction, couples' communication, stress reduction, adjustment to military lifestyles, Family Advocacy Program (FAP) case management, treatment services, and psycho-educational training programs. Knowledge of the military lifestyle that furnishes the employee with an understanding of the specific demands of military lifestyles, such as frequent separations and high-stress working environments that have an extensive impact on individuals and their families. Responsibilities include:
- Managing assigned cases, consulting with the Region Quality Assurance (QA) personnel or Supervisor where the case is highly complex or presents with special issues.
- Presenting sensitive, at times controversial, information to groups of people in a clear, concise manner.
- Modifying programs to meet the ever-changing needs of the active duty military community.
- Recognizing, identifying, and assessing mental disorders per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
- Applying various counseling approaches such as behavior modification, client-centered, rational-emotive, family systems, brief solution-focused, and cognitive behavioral therapies.
- Identifying dynamics and diagnostic skills necessary for family violence identification, risk assessment, and safety planning.
- Understanding family violence treatment principles for victims and offenders.
- Recognizing and defining personal and social problems, reaching accurate conclusions, and providing appropriate solutions.
- Effectively interviewing and clinically responding to the needs of clients, including assessing suicidality, homicidality, and substance abuse.
- Maintaining cooperative and professional relationships with law enforcement, Child Protective Services, medical treatment facilities, and senior personnel from commands of offenders and victims.
- Functioning as a member of interdisciplinary teams and participating in case discussions regarding assessment.
- Preparing case management memos, correspondence, and reports; documenting initial assessments, treatment plans, case notes, and other FAP, SAIL, and clinical documents in FFSMIS.
- Developing lesson plans for briefing and classroom presentations.
- Presenting to large groups of people in various settings, including installations, the community, and aboard navy vessels as appropriate/required.
- Using a computer from home/teleworking and a variety of software programs to develop multi-media and virtual presentations and to facilitate work assignments.
