Job Description: As a key member of IMAX’s product development team, the Mechanical Engineering Manager leads the Mechanical Design team both technically and professionally. This role ensures IMAX’s mechanical products meet high-quality standards, with a focus on management (30%) and design (70%). What You’ll Be Doing:- Lead and mentor a team of Mechanical Engineers and Designers.
- Participate in headcount planning, budgeting, and product roadmap discussions.
- Develop and maintain metrics for efficient resource utilization.
- Oversee engineering resource usage and progress.
- Manage the mechanical product development process and suggest improvements.
- Collaborate with vendors to ensure components are manufactured as designed.
- Create, approve, revise, and maintain design documentation.
- Draft specifications and participate in design reviews.
- Innovate design approaches to keep IMAX at the forefront of technology.
- Provide mechanical engineering support to Procurement, Quality, Manufacturing, Installation, and Technical Services.
- Collaborate with Optical, Electrical, and Software teams to ensure robust system architectures.
- Build and right-size the mechanical team, identifying projects for contract work as needed.
- Address issues and improve IMAX’s products with the cross-functional team.
- Triage requests to address those with the most business impact first.
- Negotiate and compromise to gain buy-in from the cross-functional team.
- Identify and improve deficiencies in product development processes.
- 3+ years in Mechanical Engineering leadership roles.
- 7-10 years of hands-on experience in precision mechanical design.
- Proficient in GD&T principles for complex parts specification.
- 5+ years using Solidworks or similar tools, including PDM systems.
- Ability to document mechanical product requirements, designs, and implementations.
- Excellent understanding of weldments, coatings, platings, and precision mechanical engineering.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience following a formal design/development process.
- Excellent time management and multitasking skills.
- Experience with opto-mechanical components, high power laser systems, and thermal design considerations is a plus.
- Familiarity with optics, regulatory requirements, electrical, and embedded software is beneficial.
- Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary design team.
- Quality mindset and passion for continuous improvement.
- PEng designation is highly desired.
