Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has a well established and diverse nuclear-driven research and capabilities that have been developed over more than 70 years. As one of the oldest nuclear laboratories in the world, CNL's Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) has the breadth and depth of knowledge expected of a leader in the nuclear industry. The Reactor Fleet Sustainability Directorate integrates science and technology to provide specialized services, products, and novel solutions to enhance safety, economics, and operations of nuclear reactors in the areas of:

Fluids Engineering

Inspection and Monitoring Technologies

Materials Science

Materials and Fuels Performance Testing

Mechanical Equipment Development

The Fluids Engineering Branch focuses on flow-induced vibration and wear, seal design and development, and deployment of fluid technologies for decontamination of large components. The branch also specializes in fiber optics applications and fluid component analysis, contributing to the overall understanding and optimization of fluid systems for enhanced performance and reliability.

The Fluids Engineering Branch Manager (BM) will manage the resources and activities in support of CNL's, S&T's, and the Directorate's missions. Work is performed to advance these priorities in alignment with Canadian government and industry priorities.

The Fluids Engineering Branch reports into the Reactor Fleet Sustainability Directorate, and the Branch Manager reports directly to the Head of Directorate, Reactor Fleet Sustainability.

What will you be doing!

Successfully execute projects and programs to meet customer requirements, including nuclear industry and Federal S&T

Prioritize and adjust resources

Execute the business for Branch focus area(s)

Contribute to the S&T vision and mission for CNL, S&T, and the directorate

Support work and deliverables based on knowledge of the technical area, environment, policy, customers, and marketplace

Identify and pursue research growth by anticipating client and market needs and recommending courses of action

Define, develop and lead collaborations that deliver growth in programs and capabilities

Develop commercialization opportunities to drive program growth and CNL's impact

Provide aspirational leadership for the branch

Foster integrated, productive, and meaningful relationships within and across directorates. Believe that the value delivered through these relationships are critical to shared success.

Model integrity, leading by example. Demonstrate and communicate the expectation that everyone shall behave in a manner consistent with a healthy safety and security culture.

Build and maintain a climate of trust. Act with transparency, respect, and fairness with all team members and stakeholders.

Promote/initiate an environment that values willingness to implement new approaches to problem solving

Ensure safe, secure, and compliant operations in the branch:

Encourage and participate in laboratory walk-downs, the Laboratory Safety Oversight Committee, etc.

Provide clear expectations to staff on providing input into, and following, worker safety tools and protocols (e.g. Job Hazard - Assessments, Radiological Work Planning, Integrated Work Control, Standard Operating Procedures)

Foster a respectful work environment such that reporting safety issues and concerns is encouraged and issues are resolved

Nurture and enhance the scientific capabilities - staff, facilities, and equipment - in the branch:

Attract, develop, and retain staff, including a clear and current succession management plan;

Utilize facility resources to ensure delivery of programs;

Develop, maintain, and support procurement of equipment and facilities to meet mission objectives.

Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

Bachelor's degree from a University of recognized standing; a Ph.D. or Master's degree in Fluids Engineering or related field is preferred.

10 to 12 years technical project/process experience; A minimum of two (2) years in a technical, project, or management leadership role; A broad scientific/engineering background, acquired through formal education;

Experience in innovation and program/project management, which includes management of people, processes, customers and financial performance.

Passion for science, technology and discovery;

Strong interpersonal skills in working with management and staff of the organization and building a team approach;

Ability to foster a team environment by understanding and managing group dynamics;

Ability to solicit points of view, ideas and opinions from team members to help form decision or plans in achieving organizational unit objectives;

A proven record in demonstrating leadership of technical organizations dealing with a diverse group of internal and external customers;

Excellent understanding of effective leadership concepts, skill sets, application and training;

Excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills with a variety of internal and external organizations and levels;

Requires strong human resources skills, ability to listen and quickly address human resources issues, motivate staff to achieve high levels of professionalism to ensure business alignment of business objectives at all levels of the operation;

Experience recruiting, and strong business acumen.

Security clearance eligibility required: Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Working Conditions:Physical and Sensory Demands:

Attention to alarms, signage, and notices is required.

Visiting laboratories, Customer sited, and accessing areas through stairs, ladders, on foot will be required infrequently.

Extent of duties requires extra hours.

Remote working may be required periodically.

Extended travel may be required periodically.

Frequently called upon to provide information, make presentations on short notice, both to internal and external groups.

Industrial and laboratory setting visits for days at a times is required.
