Genesis is New Zealand's largest energy retailer, supplying electricity, natural gas and LPG, whilst generating around 20% of New Zealand's electricity, across our portfolio of thermal and renewable generation assets across the country. The spread of locations and fuel types in the portfolio gives us significant operating flexibility and our Power Stations are valuable assets for Genesis. About the role: Our Energy Spot Trading team, located in both Auckland and Hamilton, focuses on maximising the value of our wholesale portfolio and managing risk in the short-term electricity and fuel markets. We are now offering a rare opportunity to join our close-knit and high performing team, full training and support will be provided. Our portfolio is growing with investments in new technologies including solar and grid scale batteries. As the market operates 24/7, we are looking for someone to work on a rotating roster of 12-hour shifts and cover days to ensure continuous support for the trading function. During your shifts, you'll need to work independently and make strategic decisions based on established guidelines. On cover days, you'll have the chance to further contribute to the success of the Spot Trading business and enhance your own development. Key Responsibilities will include:
  • Execute spot trades in electricity, ancillary services, fuel, and gas nominations.
  • Provide insights and input into short-term electricity and fuel markets as needed.
  • Operate and maintain proficiency with trading, optimisation modelling, and forecasting tools.
  • Monitor and analyse the NZ electricity and gas markets to forecast and identify changes in market conditions.
About you: We are looking for a seasoned market analyst or commercial professional with the ability to make swift, discretionary decisions in a dynamic, real-time environment. You should demonstrate strong judgment and independence, ensuring a high level of accuracy while capitalising on market opportunities and managing portfolio risk and compliance. Key Experience and Qualifications:
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in market analytics, modelling or trading.
  • Demonstrated success in applying numerical or mathematical skills effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to make well-informed commercial decisions.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a quantitative or commercial discipline.
  • Knowledge of power generation, electricity markets and optimisation modelling is an advantage
