This Fund will invest alongside ecosystem partners and others into black entrepreneurs led companies that are seeking equity capital and are growing sustainable businesses, creating jobs and actively contributing to the growth of the Black community and Canadian economy. The Fund will include a combination of direct investments in companies and indirect investments in funds.The Managing Director is responsible for the overall leadership of the Fund. This individual has a passion for supporting the growth of entrepreneurs, is innovative and a strong leader. Having an entrepreneurial or investment background, the successful candidate is a natural collaborator and dedicated to work with entrepreneurs using a variety of sustainable investment instruments that have a lasting impact.With an understanding of, or expertise in investments, finance or capital markets, the Managing Director will oversee the design of investment vehicles that generate returns while bringing much needed equity capital to this under-represented segment of the market. The Managing Director will represent BDC in the ecosystem as part of the Impact Platform and be responsible for the execution of the mandate, working with key partners and stakeholders in the marketplace and with the black community in Canada.CHALLENGES TO BE METLead the strategic Development.Analyze the needs of black entrepreneurs and the gaps that BDC could fill to complement the ecosystem.Develop a rallying vision, a roadmap as well as an investment thesis for the deployment of the 100M$ in order to fill the identified gaps.Build and lead a team of highly skilled professionals to support the Fund activities.Identify and understand emerging marking needs, in consultation with partners and the market, to evolve the Fund.Oversee the investment activities and portfolio management.Ensure overall leadership of the Fund forecasting, planning and budgeting.Ensure ongoing documentation management of portfolio companies.Lead due diligence efforts with key team members for new and/or existing opportunities.Effectively manage internal and external service providers, including lawyers and other consultants.Lead the go-to-market strategy and the ecosystem support efforts.Actively participate in public relations, including speaking engagements, panel participation, press interviews, writing articles for print and online publication, and attending conferences as an expert and thought leader.Serve as a strong liaison between VC teams, ecosystem team and others across BDC to build a sustainable community for black entrepreneurs.WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORThe successful Managing Director believes strongly in the mandate of BDC and BDC Capital and in the vision and mandate of the Impact Platform overall and exhibits the following characteristics:Skills, Knowledge and NetworkKnowledge of industry dynamics for both tech and non-tech firms; awareness of long-term market trends, emerging opportunities; able to characterize and quantify sector- and segment-specific industry risk factors.Possesses a current network within the marketplace that can be leveraged.Exhibits a sound understanding of the key business processes.Demonstrates an ability to source investments and to think creatively about investments and markets.Has a sound understanding of the product development lifecycle, development methodologies, growth and pricing strategies.Sound business acumen; displays insight with regards to the meaning of financial data as it relates to the operations of a company as it moves along its lifecycle.Superior communication (written and verbal) skills and the ability to influence to achieve results; can "sell" ideas to build consensus with colleagues, and with portfolio companies and investee prospects.Results-oriented thinking skills: Takes strong action and demonstrates results-orientation in tense situations; calm, productive and efficient under pressure; exceptionally reliable; consistently monitors and controls progress; values, supports and evolves key internal processes.EducationUndergraduate degree.MBA or other graduate degree beneficial but not necessary.ExperiencePrior background as an entrepreneur or investor, or both; proven ability to be an individual achiever and team player in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.Proven C-level executive leading the development, from start up to positive cash flow revenues or exit, of a successful technology business competing in global markets.Strong ecosystem experience working with venture capitalists, accelerators or incubators to deliver programs to market in an agile environment.Served as a board director and management advisor with early stage, emerging companies.Proudly one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers, we are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible environment where all employees can thrive and feel empowered to bring their whole selves to work.
