The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet's (DPMC's) purpose is to advance an ambitious, resilient and well-governed New Zealand. The Legal Services Team provides legal advice and support to the department, and the National Emergency Management Agency ('NEMA' - a departmental agency hosted by DPMC), on a wide range of corporate, policy and operational matters relating to national security, emergency management and much more. Mō tēnei tūranga mahi - About this role This is an exciting and fast-paced role within a strong professional team. The work we do makes a difference to the lives of New Zealanders. This Senior Solicitor role is a fixed term / secondment until 30 June 2025. The position has been established to provide additional legal support to the Legal Services Team to support an increase in legal work associated with policy development projects, inquiries and corporate work. The role would suit someone with at least 6 years PQE, who:
  • has experience providing advice on a range of corporate matters (contracts, grants, health and safety, requests for official information) and also has an interest in supporting other legal matters facing the department (Inquiries, legal advice relating to policy projects and emergency management response and recovery workstreams); or
  • has experience or an interest in emergency and crises management or national security interests - including legislation reform work and Inquiry work.

  • Public law expertise
  • Corporate experience, including reviewing contracts, as well as knowledge of government procurement rules and processes
  • Knowledge of the machinery of government with a high-level understanding of the legislative process
  • Excellent written skills
  • Confident, with the ability to build, maintain and leverage relationships at all levels
  • Admitted to the Bar in New Zealand with a current practising certificate.
