Established in 2014, the Institute for Better Health (IBH) is a core enabler of THP's mission of a new kind of health care for a healthier community through the application of scientific expertise, innovative thinking and partnerships. Focused on generating cutting-edge science and innovation in health service delivery and population health, IBH leads practical research and innovation that shapes how we engage, design, deliver, and finance health care to solve problems stretching from the bedside to the system. IBH's core expertise in the Learning Health System model drives how research at IBH is organized and executed, with specific thematic areas of focus in population health, patient and family engagement, innovative models of care, and implementation and evaluation science and is a growing interest in the intersections of equity and leadership science in the promotion of Learning Health Systems. The Role The Institute for Better Health (IBH) is seeking a Chief Scientist that will lead and oversee the IBH research portfolio, including research that IBH leads, supports throughout the organization, and partners on internally and externally from THP. IBH is one of Canada's Top 40 Research Hospitals and is a national leader in learning health systems and population health research. IBH has a robust team working on a range of research programs and projects, relating to Learning Health Systems, Patient & Family Centered Care, Implementation & Evaluation Science, and Population Health Analytics and Data Science. The IBH team supports and partners on research in our community with provincial and national collaborators. IBH scientists regularly present at national and international scientific and policy conferences and publish in high-impact scientific journals. The Chief Scientist will report to the President, THP Solutions and work closely with the Vice President of IBH and THP Solutions as the dyad partners in leading IBH. The Chief Scientist will also work closely with the Senior Vice President, Science for collaboration across all THPs scientific interests and strategy. The Chief Scientist will provide strategic scientific direction for IBH and THP; oversee IBH scientific faculty scientists and their IBH research portfolio; oversee IBH operations and financial management in partnership with the VP, IBH & THP Solutions; supervise the IBH Scientific Director and IBH Research Chairs; oversee the recruitment and appointments of IBH Scientists, Investigators, and Affiliate Scientists; oversee the research relationships with leaders at THP, the Mississauga Ontario Health Team (MOHT), and our community partners, and Family Health Team leaders; oversee research partnerships between IBH/THP and other institutions; represent IBH, the University of Toronto and other academic institutions; represent IBH with government agencies, research-related associations, community groups, and research funders; oversee research work across the hospital of all 162 IBH research and innovation staff in partnership with the VP, IBH & THP Solutions; and contribute to the overall growth, sustainability, and impact of IBH. For more information on IBH's work please see the 2023/2024 Annual Report Institute for Better Health - Annual Report 2024 (thp.ca) Responsibilities Oversee the IBH research portfolio, including research that IBH leads, supports and partners. This includes responsibility of the performance management of IBHs scientists/investigators and financial accountability for the overall research portfolio. Supervise and support the IBH Scientific Director and Research Chairs, including assuring compliance of scientists (chairs, scientists, post-doctoral students, research trainees, external research affiliates, etc.) to polices and requirements related to responsible conduct of research (RCR). Set and oversee strategic direction of science and research at IBH. Oversee recruitment and appointments of IBH scientists, investigators, and scientific affiliates, including assuring all required training on ethics and responsible conduct of research is completed before research is conducted. Support successful collaboration and relationships between Research Chairs (and their teams) with THP operational leaders, Mississauga Ontario Health Team (M-OHT) leaders, and other key community partners. Oversee research partnerships between IBH/THP and other research institutes, as well as liaise and collaborate with non-technical stakeholders. Represent THP and IBH with relevant government agencies, research-related associations, academic institutions, community groups, and research funders as needed. Contribute to growing and amplifying the impact of IBH and its research, including strengthening relationships with existing academic and industrial partners, and building and managing new partnerships. Will hold position on committees with IBH, THP, Mississauga Health, and others. Other tasks or activities identified by the President, THP Solutions and the Senior Vice President, Science, THP. Qualifications Core Qualifications Hold a PhD, ScD, DrPH (or equivalent) degree and/or a Professional and MSc (or equivalent) degree. 10+ years of research experience following terminal research degree. Demonstrates a sustained program of externally-funded research as Principal Investigator consistent with the strategic priority research areas of IBH. 5+ years experience as a Research Chair (e.g, hospital/university research chair, Canada Research Chair, Canada Excellence Research Chair) is considered an asset. Demonstrates a national and international scientific reputation in research consistent with the priority areas of IBH. Demonstrates a track record of peer-reviewed publications (100 or more), with representation in high-impact international scientific journals. Demonstrates a track record of keynote presentations at leading scientific conferences, government policy briefings, and for community/patient groups. Demonstrates a proven tack record of building and managing productive multi-institutional collaborations across Canada and internationally. Demonstrates a proven track record of building relationship with philanthropic donors. Demonstrates a track record of sustained contributions to the teaching and mentorship of scientific faculty, fellows, scholars, and graduate research students. Holds a senior academic appointment (full or status-only professor in good standing) at the University of Toronto. 5-10+ years in a research leadership role and demonstrates expertise in executive-level management and leadership. Experience supervising a range of scientists from different disciplines including responsibilities for external grants and awards submissions and scientific productivity. Experience working collaboratively within a hospital or equivalent organization in the application of science to improve care and population health. Exceptional interpersonal, communication and writing skills. Strong collaboration and relationship management skills to work with and align a diverse, inter-professional team. Entrepreneurial, growth mindset is key. Innate desire to take initiative, ability to work independently, and very strong organizational skills are required.
