USC Gould School of Law seeks applicants for a full-time Research Services Law Librarian to join The Barnett Information Technology Center and The Asa V. Call Law Library’s Research Services Librarian team. The Research Services Law Librarian will provide extensive reference and research services in a technologically advanced environment serving a sophisticated and research oriented faculty and student body. The USC Law Library’s primary mission is to support the teaching and research activities of the USC Gould community, which consists of approximately 620 JD students, 639 graduate and international students, 52 full time faculty members, and 130 support staff. The USC Gould faculty is recognized as one of the most productive and interdisciplinary in the country. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Provide in‑depth research and reference service to USC Gould faculty, staff, and students.
- Provide excellent and responsive general information and legal research services through regular shifts at the in-person and virtual reference desks.
- Participate actively in the preparation for and teaching of legal research courses, workshops, and presentations throughout the year.
- Collaborate with all librarians in the Research Services department to design, develop, and maintain the research webpages on the Law Library website, including LibGuides.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
- JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- MLS/MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution OR significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree is required.
- At least one-year experience working in an academic law library or as a legal practitioner.
- Demonstrated knowledge of legal information sources and related technologies.
- Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collegially as part of a team.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications for legal research.
- Teaching experience
- Demonstrated competence in delivering legal research services and knowledge of legal bibliography and scholarly research.
- Law Librarians at USC have faculty status and are considered for promotion to a continuing appointment rank after 6 years of service.
- Work with attorneys and staff to train them on electronic resources and to support them in the user of electronic resources.
- Work with the Electronic Services staff and other librarians in developing training or marketing material for Library resources.
- Handle local technical services functions, including receiving new items, processing invoices and maintaining the Library.
- Provide orientation and other training programs for Texas office attorneys and staff.
- Strong organization skills, adept at multi-tasking and prioritization.
- Service-oriented, team player, with initiative and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work under tight time constraints, manage multiple projects and re-prioritize work as needed, without supervision.
- Ability to identify complex problems, make determinations and implement effective solutions.

- Handle light reference requests and document retrieval

- Ability to work independently, take initiative, take the lead on team research projects as necessary, set priorities, and see projects through to completion
- Demonstrates flexibility under pressure and the ability to quickly and efficiently adapt to potentially competing priorities
- Ability to establish effective working relationships within the department, practice groups, office and firm, as well as with vendors and others outside the firm
- Creates workflows to effectively track spending and project library collection budget forecasting.
- Works closely with Library Manager – Serials and Acquisitions to obtain and collate relevant data and prepare reports on current and projected collection spending.
- Creates tracking mechanisms and tools to streamline budget reporting process.
- Provides collection development budget analysis & reports, and ensures budget projections are achieved.
- Directs users to requested publications; assists users with both print and electronic resources. Provides instruction and guidance for use of library catalog, legal databases, legal research methodology and procedures.
- Responds to in-library, phone, mail, email and live-chat reference questions.
- Develops and maintains pathfinders, bibliographic resources and research guides.
- Participates in library-wide projects and programs.
- Assists other reference and research services staff as required.
- Participate in speaking engagements; make presentations to large and small groups / organizations
- Other duties as required.
- MLS, JD or other advanced degree from an accredited institution
- Knowledge of professional law librarianship concepts, principles and practices
- At least 2 years demonstrated law library reference experience
- Strong analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to think and work strategically
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Experience with statistical data gathering using Microsoft Office environment; facility with Excel
- Valid CA driver’s license and willingness to drive personal vehicle on library related business.
- Administrative or project planning and implementation experience in a special library setting.
