About The Role The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisor leads interaction with Aboriginal stakeholders and our project teams throughout Whitehaven’s portfolio to provide expert advice on Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title matters. This role will be accountable for engaging with various internal stakeholders in relation to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title to determine, assess and seek resolution on the heritage impacts. In addition, this role will be providing expert advice and support to project teams, contractors and Aboriginal stakeholders on matters relating to Aboriginal stakeholder engagement, management of Aboriginal cultural heritage and land matters on Whitehaven projects. This is to ensure Aboriginal cultural heritage guidelines, policies and practices are implemented to meet legislative, business and social responsibilities. This role is based in our Gunnedah office. What You’ll Do

  • Contribute expert advice to project teams on Aboriginal cultural heritage and Native Title issues through consistent application of relevant government legislation and policy, and to support the delivery of various Whitehaven projects.
  • Influence, lead, advise and actively contribute to multidisciplinary project teams (including external contractors and environmental specialists) in the early identification and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage and land tenure risks and issues to facilitate the achievement of cultural heritage best practice of risk minimisation to deliver relevant Whitehaven projects which seek government approval.
  • Provide high level advice and solutions for project teams, environmental specialists and contractors regarding Whitehaven projects that have the potential to become politically sensitive issues and impact on cultural heritage through collaborative consultation in partnership with Aboriginal stakeholders.
  • Undertake site inspections and Aboriginal cultural heritage management plan audits in accordance with legislation to assist and support sites, project managers, staff and contractors.
  • Maintaining a thorough understanding of Native Title, Aboriginal cultural heritage legislation, policy, and its application to projects as well as emerging trends to continually challenge thinking in approaches to its management.
  • Liaise and manage matters relating to Aboriginal cultural heritage with agencies concerned, including Department Planning, NSWALC and relevant Local Aboriginal Land Councils, Aboriginal cultural heritage stakeholders, Reconciliation Action Plan, and Native Title stakeholders.
What You’ll Bring
  • An understanding of Aboriginal cultural heritage, land rights and native title frameworks
  • Is an Aboriginal person who is of Aboriginal descent, that identifies as an Aboriginal person, and is accepted as such by the community in which you live, or formerly lived.
  • Relevant qualifications or demonstrated proven experience in stakeholder engagement and/or people management.
  • Demonstrated high level project management and communication skills with a proven track record of influencing others to achieve co-operation at senior levels with internal, external stakeholders and the community.
  • Extensive high-level knowledge of Aboriginal cultural heritage, economic development issues and experience influencing and implementing policies to improve Aboriginal employment outcomes.
  • Possess a current motor vehicle driver license and willingness to work outside normal working hours and travel on occasion including interstate travel.
