Improving the health and well-being of Aboriginal childrenand families in particular is an overarching priority for every program andteam here at the Institute. We now have opportunities available for two AboriginalProject Officers to join our Youth Mental Health team and support the co-design,development, and implementation of a culturally safe and responsive,trauma-informed parenting program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderfamilies who have experienced trauma. The program will have social andemotional benefits for families by strengthening a sense of connectedness withfamily, kin, country and culture, and Indigenous identity thereby promotinghealing in a culturally safe and responsive way. You will play anintegral role within our Aboriginal and non-Indigenous research team and willcontribute to a variety of activities to help facilitate this project. One ofyour key focuses will be to facilitate yarning circles, which may begender specific, and so in this role we are specifically recruiting one male andone female Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person to ensure culturalprotocols are followed. With an experienced project team around you, you will alsohave an opportunity to contribute to the following activities:
  • Assist with obtaining ethics approval to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Provide cultural leadership and cultural advice to the project team to assist in relationship building with community members and organisations.
  • Assist with the planning and management of data collection and entry.
  • Visit community groups to promote our project and share our findings.
Conveniently located in our modern office in Nedlands, thesepart-time opportunities (3 days per week) will be offered for 3 years in thefirst instance. About You If you are passionate about working with Aboriginal and/orTorres Strait Islander families and have an interest in improving mental healthoutcomes, then we want to hear from you! The key to your success will be your demonstrated experiencein the following:
  • Demonstrated experience in providing health information to or working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, families, and individuals in a culturally appropriate way.
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships and working collaboratively with key stakeholders at various levels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work with and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally diverse and gender diverse people.
  • Research experience will be favorable but not essential.
