Your role Are you an empirical social scientist with a track record of extracting information from a few thousand data points, or a few hundred, or a few billion? Are you interested in learning and applying new techniques to augment your core skillset? Do you love to stake a position on what is about to happen, communicate your reasoning to others, and then find out if you turned out to be right or wrong? Do you want to understand what drives the stock markets? Are you excited by the prospect of working in diverse teams with a broad range of skillsets? Does your head turn if someone asks, "Now how might we take this hypothesis to data?" Is research more fun for you when there is money on the line?  We're looking for someone like that who can:  • apply hypothesis-driven empirical research methods to sell-side equity research  • learn to build and maintain financial models to evaluate historical information and generate projections  • use social science frameworks and industry knowledge to arrive at understandable investment opinions   • remain current on market developments to help frame investment strategies  • come to an informed view under a tight deadline  • test hypotheses about companies, their customers, and their competitors  • clearly communicate investment recommendations based on all of that work (via both verbal presentations and in written reports)  • help to educate colleagues about replicable statistical computing workflows and habits Your team You will be part of a small equity research franchise within a large, globally distributed investment bank research department. Your role will be to analyze and discuss the prospects and operations of publicly traded companies. We help our clients identify and access the investments that match their specific objectives. As an equity research associate with deep expertise in the empirical social sciences, you will have skills that are non-traditional in this environment. You will be a pioneer, helping to establish the next frontier of sell-side equity research. Your expertise • Ideally 3-5 years' experience designing and executing hypothesis-driven empirical research projects (research experience gained while earning a degree counts).   • Experience conducting research to inform business decisions would be a major plus.  • PhD in an empirical social science like economics, sociology, political science, demography, population health, public policy, education, or related field. (Masters' degree holders can also be competitive, with sufficient experience).   • Significant experience or formal training in statistical computing, and an ability to work in MS Excel. (Experience in Python would be a major plus).   • Intellectual curiosity, excellent communication skills, and ability to stay organized and work independently on multiple projects under extremely intense time pressure.   • Teaching experience would be a plus • Interest in equity (or stock) markets About us About us Big on empirical research?
